Description of ProgramOffers personal interest courses in a wide variety of areas. Sample course offerings include: Restore and Repair Antique Furniture; Introduction to Learning The Guitar; Healthy Harmonica; Beginning Blues Harmonica; Beginner Wine Appreciation; Explore Fine Wines; Genealogy Research; Explore The World Of Acting; Scotch 101 –Introduction To The World Of Scotch; Napa Valley Wine Jewels; Bourbon 101 – Introduction To The World Of Bourbon; Financial Aspects f A Divorce; Safe Boating Course; Coastal Navigation Course and Celestial Navigation. A Five-Part Transportation Series: The local transportation networks in New York City and Long Island, both rail and highway, have a long, fascinating, and sometimes tortured history. Through a series of illustrated lecture and discussion presentations, you will learn all about the development and evolution of these transportation systems. Presentations include: Long Island Railroad History; Before The Subways - New York’s “Els”; New York City Subway System History; Long Island Highways And Roads History And Light Rail In North America. Also offered is Nassau Community College and The Gardiner Foundation presents The Local History Institute Saturday Series for Students, Teachers, Professors, Historians And History Enthusiasts. Come immerse yourself in Long Island history! Visit key historical sites, meet local historians and scholars, and work with on-site specific projects. The Local History Institute will offer an opportunity for students to learn collections management, material culture preservation, interpretation, and public programming and engagement skills. Upon registration, participants will receive instructions regarding where to meet instructor depending on the location. Sample presentation include: Public Programming; Oral History/Material Culture; Survey/Mapping; Collections Management Interpretations/Docent/Tour. Courses vary each semester.
