General Information
Description of ServiceProvides help for sudden emergencies of households containing a child under age 18 or 19 if a full time student, who do not have resources to meet the child's needs. Such needs include shelter, fuel, repairs, utilities, food, motel placements and other essential needs. Primarily issued to families not in receipt of public assistance. Applications for energy related emergencies taken at HEAP sites. All other emergency situations are handled at the local eligibility centers.

EligibilityPrimarily issued to families with children under age 19 not in receipt of public assistance. Also for families crisis situations who lack resources in meeting children's needs. Access to all Emergency Housing for Homeless Persons Requires a Referral by a DSS office location/hotline operator. For Nassau, please call (516)227-8519 or the evening/emergency number at (516)573-8626. For Suffolk County, please call (631)854-9517 or the evening/emergency number at (631)854-9100. If you are ineligible for DSS services, please call Long Island Coalition for the Homeless at (631)464-4314.
