    APPEARANCE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMSOffers courses in Cosmetology, Barbering, Nail Technician, Waxing and Esthetician. The cosmetology program offers a program to prepare students for the New York State Board Exams as you develop hair styling, cutting, coloring and chemical techniques in addition to make-up and skin care and nail technology. The Barbering Program is the first step to a successful career. Cutting and styling techniques, shaving and beard designs, shampoos, rinses and conditioning treatments are just a few of the skills you will learn from our professional Barbering instructor in a state-of-the-art facility. Throughout the program, you will be provided with valuable experience working with visiting clients in our student clinic. Successful completion of the program will prepare you to take the New York State Licensing exam. With the Esthetician program you will acquire the knowledge and skills to perform various facial and skin treatments to improve and maintain healthy skin. Our instructor is an industry leader who will prepare you to take the New York State licensing exam so you can start your career working as a professional esthetician in a spa, laser clinic, plastic surgeons office, vacation resort, cruise ship or salon. In just 7 months you can begin a career as a Nail Technician. Curriculum for this licensing program covers all phases of manicures, pedicures, artificial nail applications, nail art, and all other sanitation and sterilization procedures. Students in ESOL and TASC™ courses are welcome. The Waxing program is a 75-hour New York State licensed class which will prepare you for a career in face and body waxing. The course will include state laws and professional requirements, physiology and histology of the skin, disorders and diseases, bacteriology, sanitation and disinfection and the removal of superfluous hair. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to take the New York State written and practical exams and obtain the New York State specialty license in Waxing.     CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSESOffers career education opportunities to all juniors and seniors in Nassau County. Whether students are looking for immediate employment after graduation or wish to continue their education, they can gain valuable hands-on experience, learn marketable job skills, and receive college credits as they meet high school diploma requirements. Students enrolled at Barry Tech attend classes for two and a half hours a day, five days a week and are encouraged to participate in various career-oriented youth organizations, work-based learning activities, and take part in local and national competitions. All teachers are certified in their area of instruction, and all students’ schedules are carefully reviewed to ensure they will meet assessment and graduation requirements in accordance with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations and SED mandates, the Common Core Learning Standards and the CDOS Credential. Technical endorsements for diplomas are available to students in SED-certified programs, who meet or surpass grade and Regents requirements.     CAREER SUPPORT SERVICESProvides adults who have disabilities with the training and support needed to succeed in business and industry. Eligibility is determined through individual assessment conducted by CSS staff. All training includes placement services. Assessment to Placement Express (APEX) This provides customized diagnostic vocational evaluations for adults with disabilities, and immediate job placement for those who are work-ready. This Level III Vocational Assessment includes comprehensive individualized evaluations. One-on-one individual situational assessments in potential training/work-interest areas are a unique feature of APEX. Intensive Support Program (ISP) This program offers 200-hour vocational training courses, which prepare individuals for employment in a field that meets job market needs. Training is done in the professional atmosphere of Barry Tech, and at actual job sites. Courses, which are offered in the spring and fall, include Building Maintenance, Direct Care, Food Service, Industrial Housekeeping, Office Automation, Stock and Inventory, Auto Lube Specialist, Airport Maintenance program, and Cashiering/Customer Service.     CERTIFICATE REVIT ARCHITECTURE 2019Offers a certificate that is designed to build job mastery for the practicing construction professional architect, designer, engineer, programmer, or technician. The courses presume no previous background in the use of Revit, but those who enroll are expected to have basic computer skills and knowledge of the basic principles of drafting. To earn the certificate in Revit Architecture 2019, each participant must complete all three courses, which may be taken in different semesters.     COSMETOLOGY/APPEARANCE ENHANCEMENTOffers a Cosmetology master class taught by industry professionals and offers Onsite Salon experiences throughout your program. Additional opportunities to attend workshops, professional development seminars and Salon Expo's are also offered. The program has increased networking opportunities with owners, creating a pipeline to employment upon certification. Students will learn hair design, nail artistry, skin care, and basic men’s hair cutting in our modern salons, taught by New York State Board Examiners and Salon Experts. After successful completion of the 1000-hour course, students may take the Cosmetology New York State Licensing Exam. Classes meet Monday through Thursday evenings from 6-10pm. Also offered is a New York State License Exam Review/Refresher Course for students who have completed a 1000-hour New York State Licensing Course and need to review for the written and practical tests and/or obtained coursework/experience either outside of New York State or the United States. BOCES also offers a course for those students that have completed a portion of their hours in another approved program and wish to continue their hours and preparation for the Cosmetology State Board written and practical exam at the Adult Career and Technical Education Training Program.     HOME INSPECTION LICENSEOffered is a Home Inspection Licensing Certificate Program. This course is approved by the National Assn. of Home Inspectors and the National Assn of Certified Home Inspectors and meets the requirements of the NYS Home Inspection licensing law and helps you prepare for the certification exam. 100 hours of classroom study and 40 hours of in-field experience (approx. 10 home inspections on weekends) plus homework assignments and final exam. 100% attendance is mandatory by state law. A background in engineering, construction, or trades (electrical, heating and plumbing) is helpful but not mandatory. Tuition includes onsite inspection forms, and floor protectors (booties). Students will be asked to volunteer their homes for inspection. After completing course and passing the NYS exam, you must apply to the state with a nonrefundable $250 fee.     RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGYWestern Suffolk BOCES is in the process of seeking accreditation for its program in Radiologic Technology. This program will be approved by the Joint Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and the New York State Department of Health. The educational program is 24 months in duration, and requires full time attendance between the hours of 8a- 4p, Monday through Friday. The program may require occasional weekend assignments and operates throughout the summer months. The program of study consists of two components: a formal didactic classroom component and a clinical practicum in hospitals and imaging centers. Clinical rotations will take place at Northwell's facilities, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, the Northport VA Medical Center and imaging centers in Nassau and Suffolk counties - including Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology. All clinical sites will be fully approved by the JRCERT. The following are the minimum program entrance requirements: * Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED/TASC). * Minimum of an Associate Degree conferred within 5 years of admission to Radiologic Technology Program. Completion of college prerequisite courses must be documented with a grade of C or better in College Algebra, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, English Composition, Psychology, and Basic Physics. * Satisfactory score on pre-entrance exam (50% or higher). Please note that meeting the above minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program, as there are limited seats (24) per year. Those successfully completing this certificate program will be eligible to take the ARRT national certification examination and when passing that examination will be eligible to apply for New York State licensing as a licensed Radiologic Technologist.     SPECIAL CAREER EDUCATIONServes students with disabilities from the component school districts. This program provides a self-contained learning environment with modifications as determined by the Committees on Special Education (i.e., 12-1-1 and 8-1-1). The Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center, the Islip Career Center and Harry B. Ward Technical Center serve high school students who are 15.5 (15 years and 6 months) of age by September 1st until the age of 21. Special Career Education (SCE) creates opportunities for all students by providing them with the technical and academic skills needed to prepare for future employment and a successful path to college or other post-secondary programs. SCE provides technical training to prepare students for a successful career. The structured training gives students the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further post-secondary education.
