    Programs that develop educational strategies and practices, including special instructional methods and materials, learning activities and diagnostic and assessment procedures which encourage children and adolescents to maintain an acceptable grade point average, avoid excessive absenteeism or disruptive behaviors which put them at risk for suspension or expulsion and remain in school through completion their elementary and secondary education. Included are school-based dropout prevention and academic intervention programs which lead to improved performance in the areas of academic achievement, attendance, and discipline; and community based programs, often staffed by representatives from a variety of organizations including the school, the police, the probation department, family counseling agencies and delinquency diversion agencies, which monitor and/or investigate a young person's school attendance and jointly develop and implement interventions which encourage the young person to remain in school or to return to school if already a dropout.

    BRENNAN HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMAn alternative program that serves disabled youngsters of high school age who present a variety of educational and emotional needs. A failure to succeed in school is often tied to a variety of emotional problems frequently linked to a disturbance within the family unit. This program provides an enriched educational environment that incorporates the Common Core Learning Standards. They receive ongoing services from consulting psychiatrists, either employed by the Office of Mental Health or BOCES. Transitional classes are available for those students capable of being mainstreamed into a regular high school. An after-school program is offered for students who are unable to attend a normal full-day school due to the students’ disability(ies). This option is also suitable for students who are employed during the school day and who require after-school educational programming to complete their high school studies. Related services, support services and psychiatric consultation services are also offered for students who require these specialized services. Also offered is the PASS Program at Brennan High School. This is a highly structured environment in which instructional and behavioral deficits can be addressed within a small group setting for high school aged students. Students may or may not be classified as special education students. All are in need of alternative education. Truancy, non-compliance with school rules and generally disruptive behavior often characterize a student in crisis; such a student is appropriate for the PASS Program. Students who are at risk due to poor achievement may also be referred to this program where they will be afforded many support services to ensure success.     CAREER PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOLOffers an alternative high school that focuses on the social, emotional, prevocational and academic needs of students who come to Career Prep with a variety of behavioral difficulties accompanied by learning disabilities. There is a high staff-to-student ratio to better address the individual needs of each student in self-contained classroom settings (9:1:2 or 6:1:2). The instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. All students are given the opportunity to earn a New York State Regents diploma or other state approved high school diploma. Students also have the opportunity of earning college credits through a partnership with Farmingdale State College SUNY. Instructional and work-based learning opportunities required for the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential are also provided. A select group of students are also afforded the opportunity to participate a character education and life skills curriculum using horses to facilitate growth and learning. Career Prep also offers the Farmingdale Program at Farmingdale State College SUNY and the Career Extension Program at Hofstra University. These community-based programs provide a transitional atmosphere for mature students to experience a college environment and explore post-secondary school options. Consideration and acceptance into both of these less restrictive (9:1:2) programs are based on an internal screening process and the student's success in the program. Middle School classes are also offered at Career Prep for students age 12 to 14 in need of a highly structured, safe and supportive educational setting where they can realize the value of school and better prepare to enter high school. Career Prep students are encouraged to make the transition from adolescence to a productive adulthood by developing self-esteem and raising their expectations for success in the future. All students participate in individual and group counseling sessions with a focus on the development of prosocial behaviors including conflict resolution skills, moral development, interpersonal communication skills, self-awareness and self-esteem enhancement.     CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ADJUSTMENTOffers an alternative secondary-level and young adult program to students between the ages of 14 and 21 who are emotionally, behaviorally or developmentally disabled to a mild/moderate degree. The program has three distinct components a Modified High School Program, Skills Enrichment Program and the Nassau Education and Treatment Program (NET). Each program component offers students a curriculum designed to develop individual strengths and to address individual needs of the students. The Modified High School Program is designed to meet the learning and behavioral needs of students with varying abilities. The curriculum balances transitional and prevocational skills training, functional academics and New York State Common Core Learning standards Instruction is aligned to the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) standards and leads to a Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC). The Skills Enrichment Program offers a daily living skills curriculum with a functional academic base to develop job skills. Students participate in non-paid internships at public and non-profit facilities and agencies, such as hospitals, offices, parks and small businesses supervised by Nassau BOCES staff and on-site personnel to learn a variety of entry level skills. The Nassau Education and Treatment (NET) Program is a collaborative effort between Nassau BOCES, Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Hospital (Phase I) and North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center (Phase II) and is designed to meet the therapeutic, medical and learning needs for students diagnosed with various psychiatric disorders. The instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Students are given the opportunity to earn a New York State Regents diploma or other state approved high school diploma. Students also have the opportunity of earning college credits through a partnership with S.U.N.Y Farmingdale State College. CCA’s behavior support program encourages positive choices, recognizes student achievement and supports the school mission to provide specially designed instruction to meet the social-emotional, academic, behavioral and transitional needs of students.     DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND INFORMATION SUPPORT SERVICESProvides local school districts with a range of educational support services, including leadership training, professional development, curriculum-writing and instructional technology staff and programs. Support and training are available for student information systems, as well as special education software, test scoring, data warehouse and student data analysis. Researched-based and targeted to local needs, these services are available to teachers, administrators, boards of education, support staff, parents, and students. Initiatives include, but are not limited to, responding to the Common Core Standards and alignment, meeting the needs of diverse learners, instructional technology, distance learning, educational leadership, the arts, library media, shared decision making, and strategic planning. Workshops and seminars provide opportunities for participating districts to learn from the foremost experts in the field, with on-site or in-class experience, providing the link between theory and practice.     INTERIM ALTERNATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMOffers a program that serves non-disabled and disabled students in middle school and high school who require highly structured services in an alternative setting. The educational environment parallels that of the JEA Alternative School. It is for non-classified students who are on long-term, out of school suspension as a result of a Superintendent's Hearing and classified students who need an Interim Alternative Educational Program as described in 201.7 of the Commissioner's Regulations. Placements may extend beyond the minimum of 45 days. This highly individualized, academic program includes Regents-level instruction. School-based counseling, behavioral management training, substance abuse treatment and court probationary services as well as support services from psychologists and social workers are also available.     IRIS WOLFSON HIGH SCHOOLProvides a nurturing and academically invigorating environment for students who have experienced difficulty relating to peers and/or adults in a traditional school setting due to their social and emotional needs. Iris Wolfson fosters acceptance, stimulates academic achievement, encourages self-reliance, practices tolerance, and motivates students to meet their highest potential and strive toward post-secondary options while earning a Regents diploma. Upwards of half of our students are college-bound yet require a personalized learning environment that includes school-based counseling two times a week with clinically trained school psychologists. The least restrictive of the Nassau BOCES Special Education settings, Iris Wolfson is modeled after mainstream educational settings. Courses are departmentalized and the instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. Students have the opportunity of earning college credits through a partnership with Farmingdale State College SUNY. All students are expected to earn a New York State Regents diploma while information on the local diploma requirements still available to students with disabilities when appropriate is provided. Various electives are offered to stimulate thought, meet graduation requirements, reinforce content material, foster independent living, and develop personal management skills. Iris Wolfson primarily serves students with emotional disabilities (i.e. Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Depression), assorted learning disabilities, and spectrum disorders whose needs most closely resemble those found in district-based programs. Instruction is modified and individualized to addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Instructional and work-based learning opportunities are also provided to assist students pursue a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential. Vocational counseling is provided to assist students and families as they begin to access important post-secondary supports and services. Middle School classes are also offered for students ages 11 to 14 in need of a structured, safe and supportive educational setting. Like our high school, all middle school students receive school-based counseling to help them identify and overcome obstacles that impede upon their academic, social and emotional development.     JEA ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLProgram serves disabled students, ages 11 through 21, who require highly intensive management needs due to conduct disorders. The program provides ongoing educational instruction that incorporates the Common Core Learning Standards to students requiring option IIIA services. The services of a consulting psychiatrist are available for those conduct disordered students who also have psychiatric needs. In addition, strong emphasis is placed upon remedial instruction, vocational training and having each student's parents and family become part of the treatment. An after-school program is offered for students who are unable to attend a normal full-day school due to the students' disability(ies).     NONSECURE DETENTION PROGRAMOffers short-term care to Nassau County boys under the age of 16 who are referred by the Nassau County Family Court due to Persons in Need of Supervision (PINS) or Juvenile Delinquent (JD) offenses. Offers a full-time educational program in the on-campus school to help with a successful return to family, school and community. Eastern Suffolk BOCES organized a consortium to create and oversee a regional summer school program. The program is located in local area school districts and serves students who attend their home districts during the traditional school year. Students with intensive management and/or educational needs require a continuation of district curriculum and instructional approaches during the summer months to prevent regression.     REGIONAL SUMMER SCHOOLAny two school districts that house summer school populations at a common site may participate in the Regional Summer School. Courses offered are determined by the participating districts in collaboration with Nassau BOCES, The Regional Summer School enables students to enrich their education through additional courses; credit recovery or work not complete during the school year; or improve their competencies in basic elementary skills.     REGIONAL SUMMER SCHOOLOffers remedial courses for students in grades 6–12 to make up deficiencies in academic work. This wide variety of remedial courses can benefit students with low or failing grades. Residents within the participating districts whose children are registered in public, private or parochial schools, grades 6-12, are eligible to attend, with permission of their home school principal or designee. Non-resident students are permitted to register after all residents are accommodated. Non-residents are required to show proof of immunization and authorization from their home school allowing them to register for specific courses and/or Regents/RCT examinations.     TWILIGHT ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOLProvides an alternative setting in the late afternoon for students who have not succeeded in the traditional educational setting. The program gives teenagers the necessary tools to either return successfully to their home high schools, or to complete their high school requirements, while helping them prepare for post-secondary education or employment. Students attend this Regents-based program in the late afternoon in their home school district. Students receive strong educational support, as classes are small and largely focused on the students. Programs are currently available in: Baldwin; Bellmore-Merrick (HSE Only); East Rockaway; Freeport; Glen Cove (HSE and ELL Only); Hewlett-Woodmere; Hicksville; Massapequa and Uniondale.     WILLET AVENUE MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMProvides an academic setting with a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of students with learning, behavioral, emotional and developmental disabilities. The instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Students are given the opportunity to work toward earning a New York State Regents diploma or other state approved high school diploma. Instructional and work-based learning opportunities required for the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential are also provided for all ninth graders. Students meeting the requirements towards a Skills and Credentials Certificate (SACC) work toward developing life skills and build personal independence. The school-wide Positive Behavior and Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program provides concrete lessons toward positive interactions. Pro-social skills to develop appropriate social and emotional behaviors are integrated into activities that encourage interaction with teachers and peers and build upon the student’s critical thought processes and independence. The Willet Avenue Middle School offers unique learning opportunities including the Therapeutic Learning Collaborative (TLC) which consists of two programs: Intensive Support Program (ISP) and Transitional Support Program (TSP) .A partnership between Nassau BOCES and The North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, the ISP provides individual, group, and family counseling by North Shore licensed, clinical social workers and psychiatrists. Psychiatric services including medication distribution are provided by North Shore and monthly family counseling sessions are required to remain in ISP. The TSP provides services for students who are ready to transition to a less restrictive environment. Students in TSP continue in their educational placement and receive individual and group counseling from BOCES psychologists, social workers or guidance counselors. Nassau BOCES psychologists provide counseling on a regular basis, are trained in crisis prevention and assess students’ needs for a Behavior Intervention Plan. The school social worker provides counseling, family support services such as SSI, respite and CPS whenever necessary. The guidance counselor provides counseling, assists in the student’s individual transitional plan (beginning at age 14) and helps students to obtain working papers.
