    DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATIONOffers a broad spectrum of classes and services that are highly specialized to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities, as well as non-classified students in need of alternative school settings. Classes are offered for students ranging in age from 5 to 21 years in Eastern Suffolk BOCES centers, as well as inclusive settings in our component district buildings. Students enrolled in our district sites are provided with opportunities for inclusion in general education academic classes, special subject classes, and building-wide activities while receiving specialized support services and instruction from Eastern Suffolk BOCES. All programs are aligned with Common Core Learning Standards and are designed to achieve appropriate educational outcomes for each student we serve. These outcomes include completion of a New York State Regents course of study, as well as academic, behavioral, and social skills development. These skills are developed along the continuum of student needs exhibited within the Eastern Suffolk BOCES area. All of our programs have received accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Elementary Level Developmental Programs services students with various developmental disabilities. Services are for students ages 5-11 and in grades K-6th grade. Class size options include 8:1:1, 8:1:1 +2, 8:1:1 +3 and 12:1:4 depending on which program. The primary goal of the program is to maximize each student's potential and to teach skills that will enable them to become as independent as possible within the confines of his/her disability. Program components include improving cognition with an emphasis on sensory motor skills development. Functional assessments of behavior and behavior intervention plans are put in place for support when needed.     ISLIP ACADEMIC CENTERProvides specialized, individually structured, standards-based education deeply embedded in the Common Core, while integrating CDOS standards into classroom and community based and service learning activities. Career-based training and related internship experiences provide students with participation in the community. Our commitment to a safe and nurturing environment allows students to access these opportunities based on their individual needs. This multifaceted academic program at Islip Academic Center is available to secondary special education and non-classified "at-risk" students ages 14-21 in grades 9th-12th with severe behavioral concerns and limited anger management skills. The Islip Academic Center offers both a 6-1-1 modified program and an 8-1-1 departmentalized program based on the New York State Regents Curriculum.     JEFFERSON ACADEMIC CENTEROffers an academic program to special education and non-classified “at risk” students who require an alternate approach to learning. The students have moderate to severe learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum disorders, or moderate to severe behavioral and/or intensive counseling concerns. Psychiatric services are also available through collaboration with Sagamore Children's Center. The center services students ages 12-14 in grades 7th-8th.     MASERA LEARNING CENTERProvides a transdisciplinary program, reflecting the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, to address the needs of elementary through middle school aged students with Autism and related developmental disabilities. Common Core Standards are presented through individualized and small group goal driven instruction. All instruction fosters the development of communication, social skills, on-task appropriate behaviors, academics, life skills and prevocational skills; through a hierarchy of structured specialized learning opportunities. The Masera Learning Center provides instruction to children with moderate to severe Autism and related developmental disabilities. The Sayville Academic Center at Stony Brook University Hospital program provides an inpatient psychiatric program for elementary-age students, enabling them to continue their education while undergoing psychiatric treatment. This program, located on Stony Brook's 12N, accepts parent or school referrals and admits youngsters after thorough evaluations by social workers, physicians and psychologists. The length of stay ranges from 1-12 weeks, during which time a full academic curriculum is provided by Eastern Suffolk BOCES. This program is for students Ages 5 – 11 and Grades K - 5th.     SEAMAN NECK MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMProvides an academic setting with a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of students with learning, behavioral, emotional and developmental disabilities. The environment and culture is structured to support students’ social and emotional development. The instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Students are given the opportunity to work toward earning a New York State Regents diploma or other state-approved high school diploma. Instructional and work-based learning opportunities required for the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential are also provided for all ninth graders. Students meeting the requirements towards a Skills and Credentials Certificate (SACC) work toward developing life skills and building personal independence through functional academics. Seaman Neck also provides small class ratios for students with more intense needs where the instructional team provides additional support through a consulting psychiatrist. The primary goal of the program is to maximize each student's potential and to teach skills that will enable them to become as independent as possible within the confines of his/her disability. Program components include academics with an emphasis on functional skill development, as well as simulated work activities to apply newly acquired knowledge. Behavior management, independent living, and social skills are also addressed. Where needed, discrete trial teaching and applied behavioral analysis is utilized in conjunction with grade level curriculum. Functional assessments of behavior intervention plans are implemented for support when needed. Students are classified as: Multiple Disabilities; Autism; Intellectual Disability; Emotional Disturbance; Speech Impairment and other Health Impairment.     TRANSITION SERVICES PROGRAM @ BROOKHAVEN LEARNING CENTEROffers Transition Services Program at Brookhaven Learning Center which is an included site program of the Brookhaven Learning Center. The Transition Services Program provides a half or full day, applied academics program, which emphasizes life and employability skills, to students with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. By utilizing a variety of simulated and real-life settings, students are prepared to transition from school to post-secondary outcomes. Included in the Transition Services Program is the Work Activities Center (WAC) for students sixteen to twenty-one, who meet established criteria, to have a volunteer work experience in the community under the direct supervision of a job coach.
