The cosmetology program offers a program to prepare students for the New York State Board Exams as you develop hair styling, cutting, coloring and chemical techniques in addition to make-up and skin care and nail technology. The Barbering Program is the first step to a successful career. With the Esthetician program you will acquire the knowledge and skills to perform various facial and skin treatments to improve and maintain healthy skin. In just 7 months you can begin a career as a Nail Technician. AVIATION MAINTENANCE TECHNOLOGYOffers a FAA-approved program which provides the hands-on experience to service, repair and overhaul reciprocating engines, turbine engines, aircraft components, powerplant control systems, instrumentation, and aircraft structure. To prepare for both the Airframe and Powerplant certification, students must complete five semesters (total of 1,910 hours). Semesters begin Aug., Jan. and May. The program is offered at our Aviation Facility at Republic Airport in Farmingdale. Tuition includes tool bag/tools, oral and practical testing for the Designated Mechanic's Exam (DME). Students must supply standard work shirt or dark tee shirt, work pants and standard work boots to be worn in the hangar. FAA exams (3) extra: $150 each. Before being admitted into the AMT program, prospective students must take the TABE Survey (Test of Adult Basic Education), receive a successful score and meet with administration to determine eligibility into the program. CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSESOffers career education opportunities to all juniors and seniors in Nassau County. Whether students are looking for immediate employment after graduation or wish to continue their education, they can gain valuable hands-on experience, learn marketable job skills, and receive college credits as they meet high school diploma requirements. Students enrolled at Barry Tech attend classes for two and a half hours a day, five days a week and are encouraged to participate in various career-oriented youth organizations, work-based learning activities, and take part in local and national competitions. All teachers are certified in their area of instruction, and all students’ schedules are carefully reviewed to ensure they will meet assessment and graduation requirements in accordance with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations and SED mandates, the Common Core Learning Standards and the CDOS Credential. Technical endorsements for diplomas are available to students in SED-certified programs, who meet or surpass grade and Regents requirements. CAREER SUPPORT SERVICESProvides adults who have disabilities with the training and support needed to succeed in business and industry. Eligibility is determined through individual assessment conducted by CSS staff. All training includes placement services. Assessment to Placement Express (APEX) This provides customized diagnostic vocational evaluations for adults with disabilities, and immediate job placement for those who are work-ready. This Level III Vocational Assessment includes comprehensive individualized evaluations. One-on-one individual situational assessments in potential training/work-interest areas are a unique feature of APEX. Intensive Support Program (ISP) This program offers 200-hour vocational training courses, which prepare individuals for employment in a field that meets job market needs. Training is done in the professional atmosphere of Barry Tech, and at actual job sites. CARMAN ROAD SCHOOLProvides comprehensive educational services for students with multiple disabilities including students with physical and developmental impairments as well as students with autism spectrum disorders, aged 5 to 21. All students are placed in small ratio classes allowing for a true individualized learning experience. Multiple methodologies of teaching are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art technology to provide stimulating educational experiences for all students. Language, academic readiness, social competence and activities of daily living are taught within a structured, aided language classroom environment. Trained staff use visual strategies combined with sensory activities and technology to encourage the growth of communication and interpersonal skills. Learning is enriched through clubs, specialized programs, community involvement, field trips and sports programs. Carman Road utilizes a collaborative team approach including push-in related services enabling staff to provide students with individualized plans to address their needs. CENTRAL SERVICE PROCESSING TECHNICIANOffers a program for those students who want to become a Central Service Processing Technician. Central Service Processing Technician, processes and sterilizes surgical instruments in hospitals, surgical centers and other health facilities. The course will help prepare entry-level technicians and refresh current technicians who want to earn certification from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM). Scientific principles of processing, sterilization, storage, distribution and inventory control of medical and surgical instruments and equipment for the Operating Room, Emergency Room and other areas of the hospital or healthcare facility will be stressed. This program will cover the primary responsibilities of the technicians and provide the knowledge necessary to be successful in this important field. Study anatomy and physiology, microbiology, infection control, disinfection and sterilization procedures, surgical instrumentation, and packaging and management of patient care supplies and equipment. The coursework incorporates classroom and laboratory learning activities and resources and will include a 400-hour Clinical Internship to be scheduled upon completion of 160 classroom hours. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the IAHCSMM certification examination for Certified Central Service Technician. CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANTOffers instruction in basic nursing theory and skills necessary to provide care in hospitals, nursing homes, patient's home and other health care facilities. Course content is related to the safety, comfort and rehabilitation of patients. Students must maintain a 75% average before being recommended to participate in the clinical rotation. Upon successful course completion, students are prepared to sit for the NYS Nurse Assistant Certification Examination. (Additional fee payable to Commissioner of Health, NYSNA). A complete physical exam is required prior to the clinic. Students must have computer keyboarding skills and a social security number or tax ID in order to take the NYS Certification exam. CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT - INTENSIVEOffers an extensive hands-on instruction course so students will be prepared for employment in medical offices, hospitals, labs and other allied health related facilities. This course will cover front office skills, personal and professional skills, medical skills and computer skills. Patient communication and the role and ethical responsibilities of Medical Assistants will be covered and is necessary to achieve certification. Topics include infection control, safety, medical emergencies, human anatomy, medical terminology, assisting with physical exam, measuring vital signs, electrocardiography (EKG), hematology, phlebotomy, routine lab tests, and how to set up trays and sterilize instruments. This course includes live venipuncture and capillary puncture in class. An 80-hour clinical internship rotation will be provided and supervised. At the end of this course, students will be able to sit for the EKG, Phlebotomy and Medical Assistant Certification Exams, for an additional cost. COSMETOLOGY/APPEARANCE ENHANCEMENTOffers a Cosmetology master class taught by industry professionals and offers Onsite Salon experiences throughout your program. Additional opportunities to attend workshops, professional development seminars and Salon Expo's are also offered. The program has increased networking opportunities with owners, creating a pipeline to employment upon certification. Students will learn hair design, nail artistry, skin care, and basic men’s hair cutting in our modern salons, taught by New York State Board Examiners and Salon Experts. After successful completion of the 1000-hour course, students may take the Cosmetology New York State Licensing Exam. Classes meet Monday through Thursday evenings from 6-10pm. Also offered is a New York State License Exam Review/Refresher Course for students who have completed a 1000-hour New York State Licensing Course and need to review for the written and practical tests and/or obtained coursework/experience either outside of New York State or the United States. HOME INSPECTION LICENSEOffered is a Home Inspection Licensing Certificate Program. This course is approved by the National Assn. of Home Inspectors and the National Assn of Certified Home Inspectors and meets the requirements of the NYS Home Inspection licensing law and helps you prepare for the certification exam. 100 hours of classroom study and 40 hours of in-field experience (approx. 10 home inspections on weekends) plus homework assignments and final exam. 100% attendance is mandatory by state law. A background in engineering, construction, or trades (electrical, heating and plumbing) is helpful but not mandatory. Tuition includes onsite inspection forms, and floor protectors (booties). All applicants to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Practical Nursing, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology programs must achieve a satisfactory score on the Pre-Entrance Exam (also known as Test for Academic Skills) and have a high school diploma or equivalent. These four programs have substantial class work and homework that require students to be proficient readers with a wide vocabulary and to be competent math problem solvers. BOCES highly recommends that students take the Prep Class for Pre-Entrance Exams; however, those who have completed a recent academic program with strong grades may consider proceeding directly to the Pre-Entrance Exam. ROSEMARY KENNEDY SCHOOLOffers a school which is designed for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The instructional program, which is aligned to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, builds confidence and capabilities of students and focuses on developing communication skills and personal independence. Research-based methodologies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual strategies, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communications systems, functional behavioral assessment and positive behavioral supports are utilized in this program. The Rosemary Kennedy School consists of the elementary, middle and high school classes as well as district-based classes which provide mainstreaming opportunities for students. Community-based instruction is an essential part of the curriculum and compliments traditional classroom learning. Students participate in recreational activities (libraries, bowling), life skills (grocery shopping, restaurants), volunteer work sites (Mercy Hospital, Hofstra University) and vocational enclaves in the community (fast food restaurants, retail stores). Each student is educated by an interdisciplinary team comprised of the classroom teacher, teacher aides, psychologist, social worker, related service personnel, curriculum teachers and administrators. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's education through daily communication notebooks, conferences, visits, parent training sessions and parent support groups. VETERINARY ASSISTING/ANIMAL CAREOffers a veterinary assisting program. Students will work with various types of domestic animals and learn proper nutrition, correct handling of animals, and identification of common parasites. You’ll also review radiographs, prepare surgical equipment, laboratory forms and logs; and cover basic grooming. Field trips will be scheduled for three Sundays. Prerequisite: Must achieve a satisfactory score on TABE if student does not have a high school diploma. Students will be post-tested on the last day of class to assess their skills.
