The program will have 406 in class contact hands on training hours and 134 – online e-learning hours (540 total hours). Students will become qualified to sit for the ASE exam. Western Suffolk BOCES, accredited by the ASE Education Foundation, is equipped to teach you the skills that will help you advance in this field. Upon successful completion you will be prepared to sit for the corresponding certification exams which stress knowledge of job-related skills and lead to Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. Learn the theory and skills to diagnose, service and repair cars, SUV’s and light duty trucks.     AVIATION MAINTENANCE TECHNOLOGYOffers a FAA-approved program which provides the hands-on experience to service, repair and overhaul reciprocating engines, turbine engines, aircraft components, powerplant control systems, instrumentation, and aircraft structure. To prepare for both the Airframe and Powerplant certification, students must complete five semesters (total of 1,910 hours). Semesters begin Aug., Jan. and May. The program is offered at our Aviation Facility at Republic Airport in Farmingdale. Tuition includes tool bag/tools, oral and practical testing for the Designated Mechanic's Exam (DME). Students must supply standard work shirt or dark tee shirt, work pants and standard work boots to be worn in the hangar. FAA exams (3) extra: $150 each. Before being admitted into the AMT program, prospective students must take the TABE Survey (Test of Adult Basic Education), receive a successful score and meet with administration to determine eligibility into the program. Programs include adult basic education (ABE) for individuals who have limited reading and math skills; high school equivalency classes for those seeking a TASC Diploma (formally GED, now Test Assessing Secondary Completion); the GRASP/Home Study programs for those who prefer to study for their equivalency exams in the privacy of their own homes; the External Diploma Program (EDP) for those seeking a high school diploma through verifiable life skills; English as a Second Language (ESL) for those with limited English; Citizenship Education for those seeking permanent residency status.     CAREER PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOLOffers an alternative high school that focuses on the social, emotional, prevocational and academic needs of students who come to Career Prep with a variety of behavioral difficulties accompanied by learning disabilities. There is a high staff-to-student ratio to better address the individual needs of each student in self-contained classroom settings (9:1:2 or 6:1:2). The instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. All students are given the opportunity to earn a New York State Regents diploma or other state approved high school diploma. Students also have the opportunity of earning college credits through a partnership with Farmingdale State College SUNY. Instructional and work-based learning opportunities required for the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential are also provided. A select group of students are also afforded the opportunity to participate a character education and life skills curriculum using horses to facilitate growth and learning. Career Prep also offers the Farmingdale Program at Farmingdale State College SUNY and the Career Extension Program at Hofstra University. These community-based programs provide a transitional atmosphere for mature students to experience a college environment and explore post-secondary school options. Consideration and acceptance into both of these less restrictive (9:1:2) programs are based on an internal screening process and the student's success in the program. Middle School classes are also offered at Career Prep for students age 12 to 14 in need of a highly structured, safe and supportive educational setting where they can realize the value of school and better prepare to enter high school. Career Prep students are encouraged to make the transition from adolescence to a productive adulthood by developing self-esteem and raising their expectations for success in the future. All students participate in individual and group counseling sessions with a focus on the development of prosocial behaviors including conflict resolution skills, moral development, interpersonal communication skills, self-awareness and self-esteem enhancement.     CARMAN ROAD SCHOOLProvides comprehensive educational services for students with multiple disabilities including students with physical and developmental impairments as well as students with autism spectrum disorders, aged 5 to 21. All students are placed in small ratio classes allowing for a true individualized learning experience. Multiple methodologies of teaching are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art technology to provide stimulating educational experiences for all students. Language, academic readiness, social competence and activities of daily living are taught within a structured, aided language classroom environment. Trained staff use visual strategies combined with sensory activities and technology to encourage the growth of communication and interpersonal skills. Learning is enriched through clubs, specialized programs, community involvement, field trips and sports programs. Carman Road utilizes a collaborative team approach including push-in related services enabling staff to provide students with individualized plans to address their needs. Support services are provided by physical and occupational therapists, speech teachers, school psychologists, school social workers as well as nursing staff and a consulting physician.     CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ADJUSTMENTOffers an alternative secondary-level and young adult program to students between the ages of 14 and 21 who are emotionally, behaviorally or developmentally disabled to a mild/moderate degree. The program has three distinct components a Modified High School Program, Skills Enrichment Program and the Nassau Education and Treatment Program (NET). Each program component offers students a curriculum designed to develop individual strengths and to address individual needs of the students. The Modified High School Program is designed to meet the learning and behavioral needs of students with varying abilities. The curriculum balances transitional and prevocational skills training, functional academics and New York State Common Core Learning standards Instruction is aligned to the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) standards and leads to a Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC). The Skills Enrichment Program offers a daily living skills curriculum with a functional academic base to develop job skills. Instruction is aligned to the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) standards and leads to a Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC). Students participate in non-paid internships at public and non-profit facilities and agencies, such as hospitals, offices, parks and small businesses supervised by Nassau BOCES staff and on-site personnel to learn a variety of entry level skills. The Nassau Education and Treatment (NET) Program is a collaborative effort between Nassau BOCES, Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Hospital (Phase I) and North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center (Phase II) and is designed to meet the therapeutic, medical and learning needs for students diagnosed with various psychiatric disorders. The instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles.     CENTRAL SERVICE PROCESSING TECHNICIANOffers a program for those students who want to become a Central Service Processing Technician. Central Service Processing Technician, processes and sterilizes surgical instruments in hospitals, surgical centers and other health facilities. The course will help prepare entry-level technicians and refresh current technicians who want to earn certification from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM). Scientific principles of processing, sterilization, storage, distribution and inventory control of medical and surgical instruments and equipment for the Operating Room, Emergency Room and other areas of the hospital or healthcare facility will be stressed. This program will cover the primary responsibilities of the technicians and provide the knowledge necessary to be successful in this important field. Study anatomy and physiology, microbiology, infection control, disinfection and sterilization procedures, surgical instrumentation, and packaging and management of patient care supplies and equipment. The coursework incorporates classroom and laboratory learning activities and resources and will include a 400-hour Clinical Internship to be scheduled upon completion of 160 classroom hours.     CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANTOffers instruction in basic nursing theory and skills necessary to provide care in hospitals, nursing homes, patient's home and other health care facilities. Course content is related to the safety, comfort and rehabilitation of patients. Students must maintain a 75% average before being recommended to participate in the clinical rotation. Upon successful course completion, students are prepared to sit for the NYS Nurse Assistant Certification Examination. (Additional fee payable to Commissioner of Health, NYSNA). A complete physical exam is required prior to the clinic. Students must have computer keyboarding skills and a social security number or tax ID in order to take the NYS Certification exam.     CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT - INTENSIVEOffers an extensive hands-on instruction course so students will be prepared for employment in medical offices, hospitals, labs and other allied health related facilities. This course will cover front office skills, personal and professional skills, medical skills and computer skills. Patient communication and the role and ethical responsibilities of Medical Assistants will be covered and is necessary to achieve certification. Topics include infection control, safety, medical emergencies, human anatomy, medical terminology, assisting with physical exam, measuring vital signs, electrocardiography (EKG), hematology, phlebotomy, routine lab tests, and how to set up trays and sterilize instruments. This course includes live venipuncture and capillary puncture in class. An 80-hour clinical internship rotation will be provided and supervised. At the end of this course, students will be able to sit for the EKG, Phlebotomy and Medical Assistant Certification Exams, for an additional cost.     EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN-EMTOffers a course designed to provide students with the essential education needed to render lifesaving care and maneuvers in a pre-hospital setting. This course is comprised of didactic presentations, team-based learning activities, practical skills sessions, patient simulation encounters, standardized patient encounters and clinical/field experiences. This program will prepare students to effectively render all available techniques of basic life support presently considered with the scope of care for a New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technician. In addition to the 159 classroom hours, students will complete 20-24 hours of clinical/field experience with as 1 twelve hour 9-1-1 ambulance tour or 1 Inter-facility ambulance tour (8-12 hours each).     HOME INSPECTION LICENSEOffered is a Home Inspection Licensing Certificate Program. This course is approved by the National Assn. of Home Inspectors and the National Assn of Certified Home Inspectors and meets the requirements of the NYS Home Inspection licensing law and helps you prepare for the certification exam. 100 hours of classroom study and 40 hours of in-field experience (approx. 10 home inspections on weekends) plus homework assignments and final exam. 100% attendance is mandatory by state law. A background in engineering, construction, or trades (electrical, heating and plumbing) is helpful but not mandatory. Tuition includes onsite inspection forms, and floor protectors (booties).     IRIS WOLFSON HIGH SCHOOLProvides a nurturing and academically invigorating environment for students who have experienced difficulty relating to peers and/or adults in a traditional school setting due to their social and emotional needs. Iris Wolfson fosters acceptance, stimulates academic achievement, encourages self-reliance, practices tolerance, and motivates students to meet their highest potential and strive toward post-secondary options while earning a Regents diploma. Upwards of half of our students are college-bound yet require a personalized learning environment that includes school-based counseling two times a week with clinically trained school psychologists. The least restrictive of the Nassau BOCES Special Education settings, Iris Wolfson is modeled after mainstream educational settings. Courses are departmentalized and the instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. Students have the opportunity of earning college credits through a partnership with Farmingdale State College SUNY. All students are expected to earn a New York State Regents diploma while information on the local diploma requirements still available to students with disabilities when appropriate is provided. Various electives are offered to stimulate thought, meet graduation requirements, reinforce content material, foster independent living, and develop personal management skills. Iris Wolfson primarily serves students with emotional disabilities (i.e. Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Depression), assorted learning disabilities, and spectrum disorders whose needs most closely resemble those found in district-based programs.     PREP CLASS FOR PRE-ENTRANCE EXAMS (HEALTHCARE)Offers prep classes for students taking the Pre-Entrance exams in healthcare. All applicants to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Practical Nursing, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology programs must achieve a satisfactory score on the Pre-Entrance Exam (also known as Test for Academic Skills) and have a high school diploma or equivalent. These four programs have substantial class work and homework that require students to be proficient readers with a wide vocabulary and to be competent math problem solvers. BOCES highly recommends that students take the Prep Class for Pre-Entrance Exams; however, those who have completed a recent academic program with strong grades may consider proceeding directly to the Pre-Entrance Exam. Most students find that the Prep Class for the Pre-Entrance Exam helps them prepare for the rigorous Pre-Entrance Exam, gain self-confidence, and solidify their interest in pursuing the academic work necessary to succeed in these programs.     RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGYWestern Suffolk BOCES is in the process of seeking accreditation for its program in Radiologic Technology. This program will be approved by the Joint Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and the New York State Department of Health. The educational program is 24 months in duration, and requires full time attendance between the hours of 8a- 4p, Monday through Friday. The program may require occasional weekend assignments and operates throughout the summer months. The program of study consists of two components: a formal didactic classroom component and a clinical practicum in hospitals and imaging centers. Clinical rotations will take place at Northwell's facilities, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, the Northport VA Medical Center and imaging centers in Nassau and Suffolk counties - including Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology. All clinical sites will be fully approved by the JRCERT. The following are the minimum program entrance requirements: * Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED/TASC). * Minimum of an Associate Degree conferred within 5 years of admission to Radiologic Technology Program. Completion of college prerequisite courses must be documented with a grade of C or better in College Algebra, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, English Composition, Psychology, and Basic Physics. * Satisfactory score on pre-entrance exam (50% or higher). Please note that meeting the above minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program, as there are limited seats (24) per year.     RECOVERY COACHOffers a program to help students prepare to work in the addiction and mental health field as a Recovery Coach. A recovery coach is someone who helps people along the path of recovery either before, during, after or instead of treatment. Recovery Coaches do not provide clinical help or dispense medication; instead they work with the recoveree, either as a solo coach or as part of a team. Learn to help patients engage with treatment and help them develop the various skills needed for recovery. This class fulfills the 60 hour educational requirements set forth by NYS and the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) to become a NYS-certified Recovery Coach or Recovery Peer Advocate. Class includes extensive preparation for the certification exam. Instructor will provide information pertaining to exam testing locations and the application process. This class has four modules: Module I-Recovery Coach Academy (30hrs); Module II-NYS Ethics (12hrs); Module III-Medically Assisted Treatment (6hrs) and Module IV-Spirituality (12hrs). Upon successful completion of each module you will receive a Healthspan.US certificate as well as information to receive your CCAR Certificate (Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery) which you will need to file your NYS application. Curriculum includes the role of recovery coaches in the recovery process, core values and guiding principles of recovery, the stages of recovery, wellness planning, ethics and guidelines for making ethical decisions, as well as spirituality.     ROSEMARY KENNEDY SCHOOLOffers a school which is designed for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The instructional program, which is aligned to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, builds confidence and capabilities of students and focuses on developing communication skills and personal independence. Research-based methodologies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual strategies, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communications systems, functional behavioral assessment and positive behavioral supports are utilized in this program. The Rosemary Kennedy School consists of the elementary, middle and high school classes as well as district-based classes which provide mainstreaming opportunities for students. Community-based instruction is an essential part of the curriculum and compliments traditional classroom learning. Students participate in recreational activities (libraries, bowling), life skills (grocery shopping, restaurants), volunteer work sites (Mercy Hospital, Hofstra University) and vocational enclaves in the community (fast food restaurants, retail stores). Each student is educated by an interdisciplinary team comprised of the classroom teacher, teacher aides, psychologist, social worker, related service personnel, curriculum teachers and administrators.     SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENTOffers a program that was created to assist students and individuals with disabilities beyond the classroom. The Supported Employment initiative has been empowering students and other individuals with disabilities by assisting employers in recruiting qualified workers with disabilities and training them for entry-level positions. The program uses a person-centered planning approach whereby an individual’s unique interests and abilities are taken into consideration during the job development phase. The Nassau BOCES staff canvasses community businesses for openings, matching individual’s strengths with employer needs. Supported workers earn at least minimum wage for entry-level positions. Vocational rehabilitation counselors and job coaches work together with employers and individuals ensuring that the best possible fit between job and employee is met for a win-win situation. When an individual first starts a job, the job coach works one-on-one with the newly hired worker teaching all tasks involved in the job as well as the soft skills necessary to fit in with the culture of the business. The job coach remains in place full time initially until the employee has successfully learned to work independently and then gradually fades to several visits per month to make sure things are going smoothly. Often, internships participated in while in school lead to actual paid employment. Nassau BOCES provides long-term, follow-along support for these workers, their families and employers through grants from New York State Department of Education (ACCES-VR) and the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).
