Programs whose primary purpose is to make the public aware of the measures that people can take to reduce the risk of fires or accidents in the home, at school, at work, in the air or on the water or while walking, driving or riding as a passenger in a motor vehicle; and/or which provide instructions for preparing for and surviving an accident should one occur. Also included are programs that conduct related safety inspections, particularly in the traffic safety area.

DRIVER AND TRAFFIC SAFETY EDUCATIONOffers driver and traffic safety courses. Course offerings include: Driver and Traffic Safety Education. Those high school students who successfully complete the non-credit, state-certified Driver and Traffic Safety Education course will receive a MV-285 “Student Certificate Completion” issued by the Motor Vehicle Department. Those who receive the “MV-285” will be eligible for a rate reduction in their automobile insurance and a senior license at the age of 17. Courses vary each semester and are held at various locations. DRIVER EDUCATIONOffers a safe driving skills and defensive driving awareness program for students who wish to earn the MV 285 “Blue Card” which gives eligibility for 10%-15% discount on insurance premiums with most companies. This course qualifies those who successfully complete the course to apply for a senior driver's license at age 17. Courses and course locations may vary each semester. DRIVER SAFETYOffers courses in Driver Safety. The first course is AARP Driver Safety Program. This course has been developed by the AARP as a community service program for motor vehicle operators 50 and over. Students can save money on auto insurance premiums, deduct violation points from their driving records and get special knowledge about driving and aging which enables them to stay on the road longer. The second course offered is the Alternatives Alcohol and Substance Abuse Education. This is 10 hour OASAS approved alcohol and substance abuse education program appropriate for young adults who have been recommended for the class through school or civil authorities. Participants will review New York State laws and consequences for a variety of offenses. Participants will be educated on the specific consequences of alcohol and other drugs. The course is education based and not intended as a substitute for treatment. Contact (516)572-7699 for eligibility and scheduling. Also offered is Impaired Driver Education Program: www.ncc.edu/idp. Nassau Community College is an approved provider for the Department of Motor Vehicles 16 hour Impaired Driver Program. Classes meet weekday evenings and Saturday mornings in the North Annex at 500 Endo/Lifetime Brands Boulevard, Garden City NY 11530. FIRE PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE PROGRAMProvides a professional education in fire protection technology for those persons interested in pursuing employment in fire protection agencies as well as preparation for persons planning to work in industrial safety or inspection. The individual fire science courses prepare students with the insight and knowledge for varied careers in fire service. Students can earn a certificate upon successfully completing the fire science courses. Most career fire departments require either completion of certificate courses and/or the degree program for promotion inside the department. FIRST AIDOffers first aid courses in: Heartsaver CPR/AED-Adult, Child, Infants Course; and Heart Association First Aid. Courses vary each semester. In order to successfully complete CPR courses leading to certification, students must demonstrate adequate CPR skills while kneeling on the floor. If you are currently unable to perform these skills, it is recommended that you postpone such training to a later date.
