    AUGMENTATIVE COMMUNICATION AND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENTSOffers evaluations which are conducted by a Speech-Language Pathologist to determine an appropriate strategy to enhance a student’s overall communication skills enabling them to effectively participate within all environments. AAC may be appropriate for students who are non-verbal, have poor speech intelligibility, or may need visual cues to assist with verbalizations. An evaluation consists of: obtaining thorough descriptions of the student’s current communication status from team members; programming and customizing devices and systems to meet the student’s needs; authentic assessment of the student within the educational setting; and presentation of various lite and high technology devices and strategies/techniques. Upon completion, a comprehensive report with recommendations is forwarded to the school district. Nassau BOCES offers follow up training for staff and families to facilitate use of the suggested AAC system/device to develop communication skills. Assistive Technology may be beneficial to students who have physical, orthopedic or learning disabilities allowing them to more fully participate in their academic environment. AT encompasses various low and/or high tech equipment such as adapted writing devices, alternative keyboards, portable word processors, switches, text scanning software, text to speech software, etc. The AT evaluator assesses the student’s cognitive ability, readiness for computer use, appropriate access method and positioning concerns. The evaluator then identifies equipment that will help the student better participate in the academic environment. The evaluation is conducted in the student’s educational setting and involves trials with a variety of equipment. A comprehensive Assistive Technology Evaluation report is generated and sent to the District Representative. Following an evaluation, staff training is available on recommended equipment and/or software.
