    CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ADJUSTMENTOffers an alternative secondary-level and young adult program to students between the ages of 14 and 21 who are emotionally, behaviorally or developmentally disabled to a mild/moderate degree. The program has three distinct components a Modified High School Program, Skills Enrichment Program and the Nassau Education and Treatment Program (NET). Each program component offers students a curriculum designed to develop individual strengths and to address individual needs of the students. The Modified High School Program is designed to meet the learning and behavioral needs of students with varying abilities. The curriculum balances transitional and prevocational skills training, functional academics and New York State Common Core Learning standards Instruction is aligned to the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) standards and leads to a Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC). The Skills Enrichment Program offers a daily living skills curriculum with a functional academic base to develop job skills.     JEA JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMServes students ages 12 through 21 who present a range of disabilities and require intensive support. Classroom instruction incorporates the Common Core Learning Standards, and major emphasis is on developing life skills so students may be successfully placed in a supportive work environment upon graduation. A variety of training opportunities for supportive employment including a comprehensive Work Activities Center is available. Many of the students participate in travel training to assist them in independent ambulation within the community. Most students participate in community-based vocational sites and receive training by working with non-disabled individuals. The program’s team approach brings together the related service staff, program psychologists, and social workers who work in concert with the classroom staff to maximize each child’s potential. The services of a consulting psychiatrist are available for those developmentally disabled students who also have psychiatric needs. The highest priorities within this program are to help students to develop functional and independent living skills for daily living activities and prepare for success in the New York State Alternate Assessments. The instructional program, which is aligned to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, builds confidence and capabilities of students and focuses on developing communication skills and personal independence. Research-based methodologies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual strategies, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communications systems, functional behavioral assessment and positive behavioral supports are utilized in this program. The Rosemary Kennedy School consists of the elementary, middle and high school classes as well as district-based classes which provide mainstreaming opportunities for students. Community-based instruction is an essential part of the curriculum and compliments traditional classroom learning. Students participate in recreational activities (libraries, bowling), life skills (grocery shopping, restaurants), volunteer work sites (Mercy Hospital, Hofstra University) and vocational enclaves in the community (fast food restaurants, retail stores). Each student is educated by an interdisciplinary team comprised of the classroom teacher, teacher aides, psychologist, social worker, related service personnel, curriculum teachers and administrators. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's education through daily communication notebooks, conferences, visits, parent training sessions and parent support groups.     VOCATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PROGRAMOffers a residential, college-based postsecondary transition program located in Old Westbury N.Y. for young adults with learning differences and Autism spectrum diagnoses. Since 1987, VIP has been helping students develop skills and accumulate experiences that help them reach their executive functioning, social, independent living, and work/college readiness goals. The programs include: Transition to Independence: this program is a VIP’s three-year curriculum program which emphasizes social, executive functioning, and independent living skills young adults need for independence and success. Employment Training: Students are placed in community-based internships with job coach support and participate in employment classes within the VIP curriculum. Pre-Degree Option: Students choose to take one to three credit-bearing courses per semester at NYIT, offered in conjunction with the VIP curriculum with individualized academic and counseling support. The Associate Degree Support Program is for qualified students who can earn an Associate’s Degree in three years in Communication Arts or Business Administration while receiving specialized support in academics and the traditional social and independent living support offered by VIP. The Introduction To Independence program is a I-to-I five-week summer experience that includes all the skill-building and experiential learning associated with VIP. I-to-I is open to high school students 17 and older who are either interested in VIP academic year programming or are in-between years at VIP.
