APPRENTICE TRAININGDevelops skilled workers through a combined program of learning a skilled trade through training on-the-job and learning the related technical knowledge in a classroom or through correspondence courses. Benefits include a reliable source of trained workers, less turnover and improved employee relations. An apprenticeship training program begins with a detailed job analysis. Then a training program is designed to ensure the apprentice masters the full spectrum of job functions, attains the knowledge necessary to exercise independent judgement, and subscribes to the highest standards of professional conduct. To become an apprentice, you must be 18 years old, or 16 years old with parental approval. The length of training varies from one to six years, depending on the occupation. Apprenticeship programs are conducted by employers, jointly by employers and unions, or by groups of employers. CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSESOffers career education opportunities to all juniors and seniors in Nassau County. Whether students are looking for immediate employment after graduation or wish to continue their education, they can gain valuable hands-on experience, learn marketable job skills, and receive college credits as they meet high school diploma requirements. Students enrolled at Barry Tech attend classes for two and a half hours a day, five days a week and are encouraged to participate in various career-oriented youth organizations, work-based learning activities, and take part in local and national competitions. All teachers are certified in their area of instruction, and all students’ schedules are carefully reviewed to ensure they will meet assessment and graduation requirements in accordance with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations and SED mandates, the Common Core Learning Standards and the CDOS Credential. Technical endorsements for diplomas are available to students in SED-certified programs, who meet or surpass grade and Regents requirements. CAREER ASSESSMENT AND COACHING CENTEROffers a center where students can meet with a career coach. Nassau BOCES is dedicated to preparing students of all ages and abilities for work and lifelong continuous career development and learning. Whether individually or in groups, career assessment and coaching is an essential first step to a solid, realistic Career Plan. Students can schedule their free session with a Career Coach and take an Interest Inventory and review the results with a counselor. CAREER SUPPORT SERVICESProvides adults who have disabilities with the training and support needed to succeed in business and industry. Eligibility is determined through individual assessment conducted by CSS staff. All training includes placement services. Assessment to Placement Express (APEX) This provides customized diagnostic vocational evaluations for adults with disabilities, and immediate job placement for those who are work-ready. This Level III Vocational Assessment includes comprehensive individualized evaluations. One-on-one individual situational assessments in potential training/work-interest areas are a unique feature of APEX. Intensive Support Program (ISP) This program offers 200-hour vocational training courses, which prepare individuals for employment in a field that meets job market needs. Training is done in the professional atmosphere of Barry Tech, and at actual job sites. Courses, which are offered in the spring and fall, include Building Maintenance, Direct Care, Food Service, Industrial Housekeeping, Office Automation, Stock and Inventory, Auto Lube Specialist, Airport Maintenance program, and Cashiering/Customer Service. DISPLACED HOMEMAKER PROGRAM-SUFFOLK COUNTYProvides multipurpose vocationally related services to individuals who have been displaced from their careers as unpaid homemakers. The goal of the program is to help long term homemakers develop and implement sound vocational plans leading to employment which will allow them to become economically independent. The program provides personal career counseling to assist women who have lost their financial support and are in transition from unpaid homemaker to the paid workforce. The program helps women who are separated, divorced, widowed, or whose spouse is disabled or long-term unemployed to find the confidence and self-esteem to progress toward economic independence. Crisis intervention, counseling and referral to relevant community service agencies are often critical preliminary needs of displaced homemakers. Program participants can then move on to various structured job readiness programs, which teach skills ranging from assertiveness to decision making to resume writing and job seeking strategies. Individual counseling and placement services, including assessment and resume preparation are provided to participants before, during, after or in lieu of structured job preparation programs. HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PREPARATION (HSE)Offers high school equivalency and literacy programs. Prepare to earn a New York State Equivalency Diploma by successfully completing the New York State Testing Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC™) exam. Instruction is based on the content of the test, which includes Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Science. All classes provide job readiness training - resumes, job applications, soft skills and onsite weekly career training workshops on various topics that include business and finance, computer technology, health literacy, debt management, and financial literacy. Please note that you need to be 21 years of age or over and that we require a registration fee. Also offered is the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) which is an applied performance assessment system that evaluates reading, writing, math and workforce readiness skills of participants in life and work contexts. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a local high school diploma. This program assesses high school level skills awarding a New York State High School Equivalency diploma so graduates can meet their academic and career goals. It is designed for self-directed students with life and work experiences and a general familiarity with the computer. It offers flexible scheduling and confidentiality and evaluates 70 competencies in ten content areas including Financial Literacy, Health Literacy, Civic Literacy, Geography, History, Science, and Twenty-First Century Workplace. LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMOffers a collaborative program that provides students (grades 6-12) with a broad range of services designed to increase motivation and ability to complete secondary school and seek entry into post-secondary education and/or meaningful employment. Students must be enrolled in one of the four participating high schools: Hempstead, Uniondale, Roosevelt or Rockville Centre. Interested students must meet with their LPP High School Coordinator to discuss eligibility requirements. Sample programs include: The Saturday Scholars Academy which is designed to provide students with supplemental academic support leading to completion of high school. An array of preparatory classes, workshops, symposiums and college tours are available to students. The Saturday Scholars Academy consists of classes on Saturdays and weekdays on the campus of Hofstra University. Workshops, symposiums and classes are also made available at the partner school sites. The Summer Programs include the Interactive Summer Programs and the Summer Scholars Academy. The Interactive Summer program enrolls LPP participants in internships and classes, during the summer, to explore different careers, through connecting theory and practice. The primary emphasis is on student learning through hands-on experiences. Thematic educational trips, connected to internships, are scheduled throughout the summer, to further enhance learning as well as provide career exposure external to the classroom. The trips also provide information on how the discipline is applied in the real world. Lunch is typically provided throughout the week. Other summer programs are offered in specialized areas including math and English. The Summer Scholars Academy is designed to expose students to careers in science and technology as well as fields that require pre-licensure, through 4-5 week hands-on thematic internships. Classes usually start after the 4th of July weekend and are held on the campus of Hofstra University. SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENTOffers a program that was created to assist students and individuals with disabilities beyond the classroom. The Supported Employment initiative has been empowering students and other individuals with disabilities by assisting employers in recruiting qualified workers with disabilities and training them for entry-level positions. The program uses a person-centered planning approach whereby an individual’s unique interests and abilities are taken into consideration during the job development phase. The Nassau BOCES staff canvasses community businesses for openings, matching individual’s strengths with employer needs. Supported workers earn at least minimum wage for entry-level positions. Vocational rehabilitation counselors and job coaches work together with employers and individuals ensuring that the best possible fit between job and employee is met for a win-win situation. When an individual first starts a job, the job coach works one-on-one with the newly hired worker teaching all tasks involved in the job as well as the soft skills necessary to fit in with the culture of the business. The job coach remains in place full time initially until the employee has successfully learned to work independently and then gradually fades to several visits per month to make sure things are going smoothly. Often, internships participated in while in school lead to actual paid employment.
