ADVENTURE CAMPOffers an exciting program, incorporating both on campus, and off campus activities. The program is modeled on the popular Adventure Education programs that are being featured more frequently in school curriculums across the country. Adventure Camp offers a one week session for Boys & Girls entering Grades 5-9. Adventure Camp aims to create a fun a positive small group experience that fosters leadership skills and encourages the campers to challenge themselves. The goal is to have the campers finish the program with a sense of accomplishment, self-confidence, and a stronger sense of themselves. Experienced Physical Education teachers direct and oversee the program with additional expertise offered from the on-site staff at the various trip locations. A limited enrollment will ensure plenty of active play and 'adventure' in this unique and rewarding program. The start of each session will feature initial ice-breaker activities and staff presentations as to the goals and expectations of the program. Campers will get to know each other and the staff, participate in cooperative games and discuss the themes for the program (Communication/Respect for Differences/Problem Solving). By promoting positive working relationships, the staff will encourage leadership roles and apply strategy while working on 'project adventure' style initiatives. Adventure Camp will be based at Farmingdale State College, with on-campus activities utilizing collegiate athletics facilities. Daily drop-off and pick-up will take place at Farmingdale State College, with off campus trips utilizing the FSCamps transportation provider. The program is Monday to Friday 9am-4pm. Summer 2019 Trip Locations Include: Rock Climbing @ The Gravity Vault; High Ropes Course & Zip Lines@ Long Island Adventure Park; Surfing with Skudin Surf @ Nickerson Beach; Ninja Warrior Training & Course(s) at Obstacle Athletics and Kayaking & SUP with JKKayak at Cold Spring Harbor State Park. Adventure Camp has a limited enrollment and has sold out at other locations so please register early to avoid disappointment. BEREAVEMENT CAMPSThe nation's largest independent bereavement camp for any child who has experienced the loss of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver, regardless of when the death occurred. Comfort Zone has scheduled separate camps in New York and in New Jersey exclusively for children who lost a loved one in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In 2005 the camp was opened to serve all grieving children in addition to those whose loss was due to September 11th. Offers the Dave Duke Panther Basketball Camp. We are ecstatic to announce the 3rd annual Dave Duke Panther Basketball Camp. We believe our staff, which has more than 30 combined years of collegiate coaching experience, is uniquely qualified to provide valuable basketball knowledge to campers. The central tenet of our camps will be the same as the central tenet of our collegiate program: to create a family atmosphere for our campers based on having fun, maintaining a positive attitude and treating everybody fairly. This will allow campers of different ages and skill levels to thrive under our tutelage. Dave Duke Panther Basketball Camps are conducted at Adelphi University in the fully air conditioned Center for Recreation and Sports on 3 full sized basketball courts with 12 baskets. All camp instruction is provided by Adelphi University's coaching staff and Adelphi players with an emphasis on individual skill development, team concepts and 5 on 5 live play. Daily camp schedules also include fundamental skills stations with a new Skill of the Day everyday, 3 on 3 games, competitions, contests, giveaways and more. BUILDING BETTER ATHLETES CAMPDesigned to train athletes from the ground up. Our progressions are designed to create sound training habits that will transfer over onto the field, court, track, or pool. Our program focuses on the 6 components to building better athletes. The Six Components to the Building Better Athletes include: Athlete Profile; Movement Preparation; Movement Training; Strength; Energy System Development; and Recovery and Regeneration. The highly qualified staff led by Stony Brook Assistant Athletic Director for Athletics Performance George Greene prides themselves on creating a positive encouraging environment where athletes can grow both physically and mentally. The Program: On day one each athlete will be assessed using our movement screen to determine strengths and weaknesses as well as address any limiting factors for performance. Additionally, we will test the vertical jump, broad jump, 10-yard sprint, pro-agility, and a combination of upper and lower body strength tests depending on their age. Once we gather this information, we will put each athlete on a 6-week program specific to their needs. CAMP FARMINGDALEOffers a full-time camp program where your child, ages 5 - 10 (must have completed Kindergarten) will enjoy a fully air conditioned indoor space, complete with an indoor gym that boasts a big screen with surround sound for those inclement weather days. Outdoor areas include their own separate play area with climbing structures, basketball and volleyball courts. Additionally, the college campus offers a variety of other spaces to kick a ball or visit the gardens. Outdoor water play is available daily. CHILDREN'S CENTEROffers a non-profit center located on the campus of Farmingdale State College. We provide a secure and stimulating environment for children from 8 weeks through prekindergarten. Priority is given to children of students, faculty and staff. Community children are also welcome to attend our center. At the Children's Center at Farmingdale State we use the Creative Curriculum for infants through Pre-school. This curriculum encompasses all areas of child development while incorporating all areas of early learning, (pre-writing, pre-math, pre-science, early literacy, music & movement). Teachers in the classroom are facilitators and nurturers, providing children with age appropriate activities, encouragement and support. Our Pre-K program provides children with the skills necessary for kindergarten. Our state of the art facility offers heated floors throughout the classrooms, and central air for the warm summer months. CHRISTINE A. NOWIERSKI CHEER CAMPCAN Cheer Camp, under the direction of Hofstra Cheerleading Coach Christine A. Nowierski-Farina, is designed for cheerleaders who desire a full day of expert training in all facets of cheerleading. CAN Cheer Camp offers an innovative and creative curriculum developed and instructed by Coach Nowierski-Farina and her Division I collegiate staff. Training will include cheers, dances, jumps, stunts, pyramid building and gymnastics. The camp is structured for both teams and individuals to believe in themselves and achieve their personal best. CAN Cheer Camp encompasses all styles and skill levels from beginner to elite. Cheerleaders will be grouped according to age and skill level. Teams will be able to work on routine building for the upcoming season as well as create spirited traditions for their schools. Hofstra’s CAN Cheer Camp utilizes the University’s state-of-the-art, air-conditioned facilities for gymnastics and stunting sessions. Each camper should wear daily: cotton T-shirt, athletic shorts with no pockets, flat sole sneakers/cheerleading sneakers and sweat socks. Players must bring their own water bottle. COACHES & TEACHERS ASSISTANT PROGRAM (CTAP) CAMPCombines the fun of being a participant with important life skills such as leadership, personal development, team-work, and communication under the guidance of our experienced educators and directors. The program is for teens entering Grades 10-12 in the fall. Working under the guidance of our camp & program directors CTAP participants will observe and assist in all aspects of the camp program and typical daily activities whilst receiving performance feedback in a constructive environment to help build self confidence and interpersonal skills. There is a limited enrollment for the program and submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance. Applications – and recommendation letters – will be reviewed, with follow-up interviews arranged accordingly. CTAP participants will be assigned a program for a given camp session from the camp director and administrative staff. Program placement can/will vary throughout the summer to provide a well balanced experienced, and although requests can be made there are no guarantees for program placement. Acceptance to the program does not guarantee participants will be offered a summer staff position when they are eligible to apply. The program will also encompass an online learning component both before and during the summer. CTAP participants will receive a series of online video tutorials on a series of leadership and related topics. This online “training” will have a quiz component which Future Stars directors will review and discuss with the CTAP participants and also use ‘real-life’ camp experiences to further expand on these key skills and topics. CTAP participants will be required to attend a pre-summer meeting to review the program along with a discussion regarding the goals and expectations of the CTAP experience. Throughout the summer CTAP participants will have weekly meetings with program director(s) to provide feedback, host CTAP group activities, and program discussions. COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATICS SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE PROGRAMOffers a residential/nonresidential summer that program that will provide opportunities for high school students to participate in research and motivate the students to pursue a career in the field. The program is held jointly by the Department of Biomedical Informatics and the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University. Each student will be working in a lab mentored by a faculty or a Ph.D. student on a research project. Students will also visit labs and attend seminars introducing cutting edge research in both informatics and computer science. They will connect these concepts to larger applications in electrical engineering. The participants will begin to develop their skills in electronics by building some basic circuits and will advance to more complex electronics projects using breadboards and microprocessors. They will each receive a credit-card sized computer called a Raspberry Pi and will learn how to develop code with it. The students will begin by learning concepts and techniques as a class but will quickly move to working in small groups or with a partner. We will use lectures by university faculty, library research and model systems such as bacteria, yeast, Euglena, C. elegans and Dictyostelium, to help the students choose and explore topic areas that interest them. Students working in groups will use the information and techniques to develop and test a hypothesis using one of the model systems. RISING STARS CAMPOffers a multi-sport experience to nurture our youngest campers in K-2 as they enter the world of athletics and life. Campers participate in an age-appropriate program covering fundamental skills of the 'core' sports, as well as enjoying additional activity periods where creativity, education and character development are the focus. Rising Stars campers will participate in daily on-campus water park activities to keep them cool and refreshed. Core-Sports' Training (Mornings) Campers receive training and instruction from experienced coaches with a focus on techniques and fundamental skills. Progressions are made based upon level, with campers receiving individual attention and positive feedback. Campers then move into matches and modified scrimmages, as coaches look to work with them as they apply the skills in a game setting. Each program will be laboratory- based, but will involve reading, computer searching, writing and group work. Students entering 6th grade will be given opportunities to use their imagination and creativity while actively engaged in science and engineering practices. They will be guided through a variety of hands-on science investigations that include designing, constructing, testing, and modifying ideas. We will use the scientific method as we explore the various areas of science such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Students entering 7th grade will focus on developing laboratory skills. The students will be guided through several scientific explorations in physics, chemistry, microbiology and ecology. TechPrep addresses the underrepresentation of minority women in stem by providing an educational enrichment program to empower middle school girls from underserved communities on long island. This robust program develops students’ competence and confidence in their math and science abilities by providing an intensive multi-level program that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (steam) with mentoring and application based hands-on activities. Over the course of one week in the summer, TechPrep students participate in intensive project based instruction facilitated by university faculty, graduate, and wise undergraduate mentors. Participation is based on three sequential modules that are taken over the course of three years. Module 1: Biology & Chemistry; 6th grade students discover living organisms and their chemical and physicochemical processes with lessons. VOLLEYBALL CAMPOffers a program is that designed for girls entering grades 4-10 of all levels to develop and improve the necessary skills and concepts of the game to reach their goals. Volleyball camps offer the perfect opportunity to fine tune skills ahead of the school season. Experienced and passionate coaches will help you master the fundamentals, develop proper mechanics and gain game play experience. The curriculum focuses on all facets of the game and offers personal and small group instruction throughout the week to prepare for the game environment. Future Stars Summer Camps programs at Farmingdale State College are permitted to operate by Suffolk County Dept.of.Health. All programs take place on campus. Campers have the option to enjoy a daily lunch program with hot and cold menu choices as they eat in the comfortable air-conditioned cafeteria. VOLLEYBALL CAMPOffering All Skills Camp, Attacking Camp, Setting Camp, Libero Camp, Elite Camp and Satellite Camp. The All Skills Camp is designed for players of all levels ranging from beginner to varsity level entering grades 6-12. Campers will receive 12 hours of skills instruction covering the six main skills needed to become a successful volleyball player. Skills will be taught in both individual and team settings. We will also discuss what it takes what it takes to be a collegiate athlete and other important topics for today’s athletes. At the Attacking Camp athletes will learn from transitioning off the net to a powerful approach to a multi-directional arm swing, campers grades 6-12 can expect to learn every facet of attacking from Coach Bullock. You will learn to see the block as you jump, which will decide whether you attack down the line, seam, or angle. At Setting Camp: This camp will include two skilled and technique packed sessions led by Stony Brook Head Volleyball Coach Kristin Belzung. Coach Belz, campers grades 6-12 will focus on hand position, body posture, footwork patterns, release, location, and decision making. Libero Camp: This camp will be broken into serve receive skills and defensive skills during the two sessions. Coach Neef will put strong emphasis on body position, footwork, platform examination, various digging techniques, advanced floor skills, and ball handling techniques for serve receive and defense for campers grades 6-12. The Elite Camp is recommended for athletes with multiple years of club volleyball experience, high school athletes, and players that are expecting to play volleyball at the collegiate level. You will experience two intense days of college level instruction that will resemble training sessions and drills used in the Stony Brook Volleyball Program daily. Satellite Camps: If your time is short and you can’t get away don’t worry, we will come to you. We can bring our camps to your school or club. We will tailor our satellite camps to meet each program’s specific goals and needs. Camp length and training will be uniquely designed for each. WEEKEND RESPITE PROGRAMOffers a weekend respite for campers with physical and developmental disabilities between ages 6-21 years old. Check in is Friday evening at 8pm and check out is Sunday at 3pm. Campers enjoy arts and crafts, music, games, movies, and walks in the woods. The program benefits parents by giving them a break from very demanding responsibilities as their child's caregiver.
