ADAPTIVE DRIVER TRAININGOffers an Adaptive Driver Training program for individuals exhibiting physical or non-physical disabling conditions. Candidates can be first-time drivers or re-trainees. All prospective students must possess a New York State learner permit or valid driver license. Additionally, students are required to undergo a thorough driving evaluation to determine whether the student possesses the appropriate physical, mental, and emotional abilities necessary for success in driver training. All vehicles are fully equipped with adaptive driving equipment for those with physical limitations. One-on-one training is individualized and designed to teach driving habits and skills necessary to pass a New York State road test. The service is available to all school districts, as well as state and private rehabilitation programs. DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSEThese Defensive Driving courses are approved by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles as a course provider under the Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP). Drivers may be eligible to reduce as many as 4 points on your driving record. Principal owners of a vehicle until receive a miminimum of 10% reduction in the base rate of your auto or motor cycle liability and collision insurance premiums for 3 years. DRIVER AND TRAFFIC SAFETY EDUCATIONOffers driver and traffic safety courses. Course offerings include: Driver and Traffic Safety Education. Those high school students who successfully complete the non-credit, state-certified Driver and Traffic Safety Education course will receive a MV-285 “Student Certificate Completion” issued by the Motor Vehicle Department. Those who receive the “MV-285” will be eligible for a rate reduction in their automobile insurance and a senior license at the age of 17. Courses vary each semester and are held at various locations. DRIVER SAFETYOffers courses in Driver Safety. The first course is AARP Driver Safety Program. This course has been developed by the AARP as a community service program for motor vehicle operators 50 and over. Students can save money on auto insurance premiums, deduct violation points from their driving records and get special knowledge about driving and aging which enables them to stay on the road longer. The second course offered is the Alternatives Alcohol and Substance Abuse Education. This is 10 hour OASAS approved alcohol and substance abuse education program appropriate for young adults who have been recommended for the class through school or civil authorities. Participants will review New York State laws and consequences for a variety of offenses. Participants will be educated on the specific consequences of alcohol and other drugs. Nassau Community College is an approved provider for the Department of Motor Vehicles 16 hour Impaired Driver Program. Classes meet weekday evenings and Saturday mornings in the North Annex at 500 Endo/Lifetime Brands Boulevard, Garden City NY 11530. DRIVERS EDUCATIONA complete, professionally taught Driver Education Course that will provide all students with a comprehensive introduction to the driving experience. At the end of all sessions, students will have received 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of in-the-car driving related to "rules of the road," traffic safety concerns, defensive driving, proper handling of vehicle, parking, driving in traffic and problems of substance abuse as related to driving. Students who complete the program with a passing grade of 65 in each category will receive the Certificate of Completion (MV-285), the opportunity of a senior driver's license (Class 5) at age 17, and an insurance reduction according to the policies of your insurance carrier. Students must obtain from DMV the 50 hour completion form for graduated licensing requirements. IMPAIRED DRIVER PROGRAMOffers an Impaired Driver Program for eligible motorists convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), or Driving While Alcohol Impaired (DWAI). The Department of Motor Vehicles determines eligibility for the program. If you are eligible, you must register at your local DMV office. For detailed information on the program visit the DMV website. Nassau Community College offers a convenient schedule with weekend and evening classes. Classes are offered Monday - Thursday evenings, Saturday mornings and occasionally Sunday mornings. The $234 fee (certified check or money order) is payable to NCC, at the first class. Classes are located in the NCC North Annex at 500 Endo Blvd, Garden City. If you need additional information about NCC’s Impaired Driver Program, Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. -4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
