The ESL non-credit English Program and Intensive English Program at Suffolk County Community College provides high quality English as a Second Language instruction to equip second language learners with the linguistic ability necessary to thrive academically, professionally and socially. Our programs foster strong English language acquisition through creative, yet structured instruction in a positive and welcoming learning environment. Our program has helped many people to develop their English language skills. Students are placed in classes that are tailored to their English ability and each semester they advance through the levels and modules so that they can eventually continue their education at Suffolk County Community College or at another college or university.     LANGUAGE CENTEROffers classes in the English Language, Foreign Languages, and American Sign Language. The Language Center serves the needs of the community and is geared toward students who want to strengthen their overall language proficiency. Courses are taught on weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays. Three 8-week sessions are held each year in the Fall, Spring, and Summer, and a 6-week session is given in the Winter. The Language Center offers the use of our computer lab to all of our students. We have software for many of our English language and foreign language courses. All registered students are welcome to take advantage of this effective educational resource. NCC’s Language Center offers English courses for non-native English speakers. Classes focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Our goal is to help students strengthen English language skills in order to interact comfortably in community, social, business, and work situations. New Students should make an appointment to take the Language Center reading and writing assessment test by calling (516) 572-7062, emailing to LC@ncc.edu, or scheduling an appointment in person at the LC Office located in Cluster F, Room 309. Financial Aid is not available for these classes. Also offered are Languages From Around The World To meet the demands of our fast-growing global culture, the Language Center provides a variety of foreign language courses as well as American Sign Language. Class offerings are based on the diverse needs of our students who may want to learn a foreign language in order to travel, converse with family members, attend local and international conferences, or improve business communications. Foreign language classes are taught at different levels, guiding students in speaking, reading, writing, and listening as well as in developing a familiarity with international customs, cultures, and traditions. Additionally, our foreign language classes can help develop bi-lingual skills for teachers to enhance their marketability. We also offer American Sign Language to people wishing to familiarize themselves with this beautiful language. Students may be required to purchase a textbook or other educational material for many of our courses.     LANGUAGESOur instructor-facilitated online career courses are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive. Our instructors are famous for their ability to create warm and supportive communities of learners. All courses run for six weeks (with a 10-day grace period at the end). Courses are project oriented and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, supplementary links, and more. You can complete any course entirely from your home or office, any time of the day or night. A sample of the courses that are offered include: Speed Spanish; Discover Sign Language; Speed Spainsh II; Instant Italian; Beginning Conversational French. While the courses are all instructor-led, you do not have to log-in at any pre-defined time. Instructors lead the courses through discussion areas that can be accessed at any time after the course starts. Courses run for six weeks, with an available 10-day extension period at the end, and most take an average of 24 hours to complete. One lesson is released every Wednesday and Friday for the six-week duration of the course. You do not have to be present when lessons are released and you can login to the courses at any time after the course starts. You will have access to all lessons until the course ends. However, the interactive Discussion Area that accompanies each lesson will automatically close two weeks after the lesson is released. Thus, we strongly recommend that you complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.
