    PHOBIA AND TRAUMA CLINICOffers unique and technologically advanced treatments for patients whose fears inhibit their quality of life. The clinic has also successfully treated clients with post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition caused by an unusually devastating and/or tragic experience. Some common phobias treated at the clinic include: travel on airplanes, trains; public speaking; animals; heights; post-traumatic stress disorder; experiences in a war environment; an accident on an airplane or in a car; unexpected and devastating tragedies, such as the events of Sept. 11 and rape or sexual abuse. Treatment of phobia and PTSD is accomplished by the use of exposure therapy. In exposure therapy, under safe, controlled clinic conditions, patients are immersed in the situations they have long avoided, or asked to confront the traumas they experienced in their lives. Therapists simulate the environments that trigger a phobic response so the patients can learn to better manage their fears. Therapists use Imaginal exposure; virtual reality exposure and in-vivo exposure. The Saltzman Center is open Monday through Saturday. All therapy services are by appointment only. Fees are set at the time therapy is initiated. All services are provided in a professional manner and conform to the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association.     PSYCHIATRIC DEPARTMENTProvides an 23 bed acute psychiatric unit certified by the New York State Department of Health and the Office for Mental Health. It is affiliated with the University Hospital at Stony Brook, Department of Psychiatry. The unit serves mentally ill patients as well as mentally ill, chemically addicted (MICA) patients. Its interdisciplinary approach includes board certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinical social workers, recreation therapists, and registered dietitians. It provides 24 hour nursing care by a team of psychiatric nurses and nursing assistants. The center follows a structured approach to allow for individual treatment. Therapies include medication management, individual and group therapy, family counseling and electro-convulsive therapy (ECT).
