Institutions that acquire, preserve, research, exhibit and provide for educational use, objects or artifacts of artistic, cultural, historical, scientific or technological significance which are presented in a popular and fairly non-technical manner. Collections may include works of art; objects and artifacts that are related to the study of zoology, biology, botany, mineralogy, geology and other natural sciences, history, archeology, science and technology; materials related to motion pictures, sports, music, theater and other aspects of the arts and popular culture; memorabilia and other collectibles; or material relating to the history and achievements of a particular cultural or ethnic group. Most museums have auxiliary services which enhance the museum experience for visitors.

CENTER FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HUMAN UNDERSTANDINGThe mission of the Center is to educate our community on historical events, and to promote issues of social justice and respect for human dignity through educational programming. Our vision is of a world in which each person can live in peaceful coexistence and pursue a life in freedom and dignity, and in which our citizens reflect upon their moral responsibilities. In addition to programs and events, we offer tours of our Holocaust museum which houses the largest collection of Holocaust artifacts in the region. The CSJHU office and Gallery are located in the Huntington Library on the College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden, NY. Hours of Operation; Monday through Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. when classes are in session. The collection features rare artifacts, memoirs, documents and photographs that are interpreted and presented in permanent and traveling exhibits. Guided tours are available for classes and groups. CONNETQUOT RIVER STATE PARK PRESERVESeeks to protect and preserve natural habitat which is home to a variety of plant and wildlife including waterfowl, osprey and white-tailed deer. Preserve also offers 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding (by annual permit), cross country skiing and nature trails, as well as fly fishing (with permit). The 32 mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail passes through the preserve. A museum and gift shop are also part of the preserve. The Museum’s mission is achieved through collection acquisition and preservation, exhibitions and interpretive resources. The Hofstra University Museum initiates and facilitates rich and varied cultural and artistic explorations in an atmosphere that promotes the open exchange of ideas. The Hofstra University Museum was founded in 1963 and is an American Alliance of Museums (AAM) nationally accredited museum. The museum has a permanent collection of approximately 5,000 works of art in varied media dating from the ancient to the contemporary, and includes American artists of the 18th through 21th centuries. The museum is open year-round to the public with free admission and offers educational and public programs (i.e., lectures, performances, workshops, tours). The Hofstra University Museum has been awarded the highest honor a museum can receive, continued accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Approximately 3-4% of museums nationwide have earned this distinguished recognition. SOUTH SHORE NATURE CENTERA 200 acre preserve which stretches to the shores of the Great South Bay. It contains mature upland forests, freshwater wetlands, vast salt marsh, and an extensive network of trails and boardwalk. It also houses a Visitor's Center which provides interactive exhibits and collections of both live animals and mounted wildlife specimens and dioramas. STEINBERG MUSEUM OF ARTSteinberg Museum of Art is currently relocating to the lower level of the B. Davis Schwartz Library at LIU Post. We look forward to renovations beginning in April 2017 and will reopen in September 2017. Steinberg Museum of Art Museum is the caretaker of Long Island University's Permanent Art Collection. The University began acquiring work in the early 1970s and over the last three decades more than 650 new works have entered the collection through gifts and donations.
