    LONG ISLAND COMMUNITIES OF COLOROffers several programs aimed at educating the African-American population about HIV infections and promoting behavior that reduces the incidence of HIV infections. Programs offered include the SISTA (Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS) Intervention, Peer Program and Outreach, and Health Communication/Public Information (HCPI). Also provides the coordination of multi-agency case management, HIV counseling and testing along with information on related supportive services.     LONG ISLAND METRO MIGRANT EDUCATION & TUTORIAL SERVICES PROGRAM (METS)Offers a program that is funded through a state grant and authorizes supplementary Title I educational services and advocacy for all Agricultural Migrant Eligible students, families and Out-of-School Youth. Migrant eligibility is determined through a certification process by the New York State Office of Identification and Recruitment (ID&R). Families who have moved into a school district within the past three years and whose primary wage earner works in agriculture or fisheries may be referred to determine their eligibility. Once eligibility is confirmed, the Migrant Education Tutorial Service Program addresses the special needs of migrant children ages 3 – 22 as outlined in the NYSED – MEP Service Delivery Plan. Parents, students, and staff work in partnership with local schools, community service agencies and agricultural businesses to help migrant children and youth meet New York State’s challenging educational standards. Assuming an advocacy role, staff members assess the educational, health, and social needs of each family member and outlines an appropriate service provision model. All services are supplemental to the local school district’s efforts. These services are available to migrant eligible farm workers under age 22 and to children of agricultural workers, fishers and food packers in school districts in Suffolk, Nassau and the five boroughs at no cost to districts.     MIGRANT HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PROGRAM (HEP)Helps migratory and seasonal farmworkers (or children of such workers) who are 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in school to obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma and, subsequently, to gain employment or begin postsecondary education or training. The program serves students across the country annually, and New York State was just awarded a sub-grant to provide these services regionally through the local MEP Program (administered through ESBOCES). The competitive award was made for up to five years of funding. The purpose of the HEP Program is to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers and members of their immediate family: (1) obtain a general education diploma that meets the guidelines for high school equivalency (HSE) established by New York State; and (2) gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education (IHE) or other postsecondary education or training. Peer outreach counselors assist each person to help them reestablish hope, take charge of their situation and get back on track. Services are mobile and can be provided in any setting where a person is most comfortable. Individuals receive peer support and are assisted with linkage to resources such as housing, self-help, mental health services, substance abuse, medical services, financial assistance, legal services, employment and benefits as needed.     SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMEncourages youth to establish a good work ethic through employment and workshops. Promotes punctuality, teamwork, how to follow rules and regulations, as well as respect of self, co-workers and supervisors. At- risk youth are selected between the ages of 14-18. Interviews are held in May and orientation in June. Employment is seven weeks, Monday-Friday. Worksites are established within the community at local churches, schools, agencies, parks and beaches. Workshops are given throughout the program in areas such as Banking, Job Attitudes, Career Goals, Job Interviewing and Resume Writing.
