CHILDREN'S READINESS CENTERSpecializes in serving children in need of a highly structured learning environment and present with autism spectrum disorders or PDD (pervasive development disorder). Classes are small, allowing for an intensive learning environment. Students learn appropriate on-task "school-like" behaviors and how to be as independent as possible. CRC utilized the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to shape behaviors and teach new skills through repetition and reinforcement. Instruction targets Activities of Daily Living (ADL). A progressive total communication system is utilized—including spoken words, photographs, pictures, symbols and/or sign language—to increase communication skills. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to engage students in a social exchange for requesting and/or communicating their needs. Additionally, we have specially trained staff that may address any mealtime management concerns, such as limited food repertoire. A collaborative team including teachers, social workers, psychologist, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and administrative personnel strives to meet the individualized educational needs of each child. All students benefit from an adapted physical education and music program. Family input is encouraged and parent training is provided throughout the school year. Day and evening workshops assist parents with skill development and behavioral interventions and ongoing support groups are facilitated by the social worker. The CCI encourages parent involvement and education in an enriched learning environment. The interdisciplinary services of the clinical programs associated with the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center render the CCI unique in the provision of education, care, assessment and enriched learning environments for young children and their families. The CCI is now a Champion Center! The CCI is one of the first child care centers in Nassau County to earn this designation from the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The CCI has just completed the Eat Well Play Hard Program Initiative (EWPH) under the auspices of the Child Care Council of Nassau. EWPH was developed by CACFP to prevent childhood obesity and reduce long-term risks for chronic disease through promotion of targeted dietary practices and increased physical activity. The initiative just called for programs to step up and provide more nutritionally balanced meals and snacks, teacher training in nutrition and physical activity, parent education workshops and food discovery activities in our classrooms. Champion Centers are held to very high standards and are required to increase the number of healthy snacks provided. In addition to NAEYC reaccreditation, the Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute is recognized as a preferred provider servicing military families by the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies and as a “Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care Center” by the New York State Department of Health’s Child and Adult Care Food Program. STONY BROOK CHILD CARE SERVICES, INC.Offers child care for children from 8 weeks to 5 years. The center is nationally accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., with various shifts available, and serves University, Health Sciences and Medical Center faculty staff and students as well as non-affiliated community families. Affiliated families pay tuition according to a sliding scale based on gross family income. The Center is staffed by full-time professionals, assisted by part-time support staff and University students enrolled in the Psychology 488 Internship. Under the supervision of our staff, these carefully selected students work closely with the teachers in the classroom and attend weekly training. One of the ways we support a low child to adult ratio is to invite students who have completed these courses with high marks to work as part time support staff. The child-teacher ratio in the 3-5 year old program is 7 to 1; and the Infant-Toddler program is 4 to 1. Our primary aim is to provide a warm, supportive and creative atmosphere. Each room is "family-grouped", enabling children to interact with others of different ages. Since children at this stage of their development "learn by doing," there are plenty of hands-on activities that at times build a child’s self-reliance. Children bring their own lunch. We provide nutritionally sound snacks in the morning and afternoon, that the children help to prepare. Our staff foster a positive, non-sexist, non-violent and non-authoritarian, multi-cultural environment. Children are encouraged to express their feelings and needs verbally and to respect those of others. For more information and/or an appointment to visit, please contact us. For further information or guidance in the location and selection of child care services, please contact the Child Care Council of Suffolk at (631)462-0303 or the Child Care Services of Nassau at (516)358-9250.SuffolkSTONY BROOK CHILD CARE SERVICES, INC.STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
