They will conduct comprehensive augmentative communication evaluations on students presenting with severe communication impairments, provide consultation/support services for all staff working with students who utilize augmentative communication aids, techniques and strategies and conduct individual and/or small group trainings related to the use of specific augmentative communication aids, technique and strategies. The Assistive program evaluates a student's ability to access the curriculum depending on his/her disability. Evaluators collaborate with the educational team to identify software programs and/or adaptive equipment to enable the student to access the curriculum as independently as possible. They will provide training/consultations to students, staff and family in the use and implementations of the recommended adaptive equipment and/or software. DIAGNOSTIC AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERSServices include: Comprehensive autism diagnostic evaluations (for toddlers, children, adolescents and adults); Individualized psychotherapy (for children, adolescents, and adults with high-functioning ASD); Social skills groups (for all ages); and Milieu Communication Therapy (a language intervention focused on building prelinguistics and overall functional communication). The institute also is committed to providing ongoing support for family members and caregivers of children with ASD. These services include individualized counseling, outreach support, education about the needs of children with ASD, and assistance in utilizing community resources. The institute is also working on developing support groups for siblings of children and adults with ASD. In addition to the services provided, the institute is also active in a number of different research programs. Currently, the clinic is conducting a study on the effectiveness of Milieu Communication Therapy (MCT) in young children with ASD. MCT utilizes a naturalistic approach to improve nonverbal (such as, reaching, pointing, eye contact, vocalizations, etc.) and verbal communication in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Intervention is individually tailored to each child’s play interest to maximize their motivation and increase their likelihood of making gains. There are also ongoing studies on the effectiveness of social skills intervention for children with ASD; the potential auto-immune connection for children with ASD; and possible Etiological relationships among the more than 100 families the institute has served thus far. HY WEINBERG CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION DISORDERSIs a not-for-profit, full-service speech and hearing center. We provide speech, language, and hearing evaluations and therapy to individuals and groups of all ages and all types of communication disorders. Undergraduate and graduate students provide these services under the supervision of NYS licensed and nationally certified Speech-Language Pathologists. Most services are provided free of charge with a nominal administrative fee per semester. Speech/Language services at the HY Weinberg Center include: Comprehensive Speech/Language; Evaluations; Individual and Group Therapy and Parent/Family Education. JEA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMStudents, ages five through twelve, are educated at the elementary school of the Special Education Division. This program provides instruction in basic skills of reading, writing, communication and math. For those students with multiple disabilities, instructional emphasis is on Activities of Daily Living, mobility and basic communication. In addition to basic classroom instruction students may receive adaptive physical education if needed. An enrichment program in basic skills and basic technology education is part of the core curriculum which assists students in preparing for the New York State standardized tests or Alternative Assessments. A wide range of special activities help stimulate each student's social skills. In addition, some students receive services from a consulting psychiatrist.
