A neurological disorder that affects one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using spoken or written language. The disability may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or to do mathematical calculations. Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps; of intellectual disabilities; of emotional disturbance; or of environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages.

AUTISM CONSULTANT SERVICES/PARENT TRAINING/HOME ABA SERVICESConsultations and trainings are designed to assist staff to work effectively at sites with the most challenging students on the autism spectrum. These services are added to a District’s Commitment Form when the service of a behavioral specialist or autism consultant is recommended by the CSE for implementation on a regular basis over a period of time. Autism consultants will address applied behavior analysis strategies, behavioral strategies, and educational strategies. Through Parent Training, they can assist parents in utilizing strategies in the home that are consistent with those used in school to facilitate student progress. Home ABA Services are designed to meet the needs of component districts for students with autism spectrum disorders to provide for continuity and generalization. LITERACY CENTERProvides literacy assessment and instruction for students entering grades 1-12 who are experiencing difficulties in reading and/or writing. This includes problems with decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and study skills. Teachers employ a variety of instructional approaches, based on the most current educational theory and research. Assessment and instruction are provided by New York State-certified teachers completing certification or a Master’s degree in literacy. Each new student entrant is individually evaluated before the instructional sessions begin, and an individualized plan is developed to meet the specific literacy needs of each student. The evaluation includes a combination of formal and informal assessments, personal interviews, and writing samples. Based on the results of the evaluation, students are placed in either small groups (no more than four students) or in an individual setting. Conferences inform parents of progress and make recommendations for support at home. At the end of the semester, a summary report is written for all students. Programs are offered during three semesters per year: Fall, Spring, and Summer. During the Fall and Spring semesters, classes meet for twenty, forty-five minute instructional sessions. In addition, Saturday classes are available; a single, ninety-minute session will be held per week. The cost of instruction is based on group or individual placement. We serve adult participants though our Article 16 Clinic. Occupational therapy services promote functional abilities and engagement in daily routines. Occupational therapists may asses an individual's ability to perform ADL's and develop adaptions in order for the participant to be successful and the MOST independent in eating, dressing, grooming, toileting and hygiene. OT services also focus on sensory integration, play/leisure skills, gross and fine motor skills, prevocational /vocational skills, social interaction skills and psychosocial issues. Physical Therapy services provide support for students so they may more fully participate in the curriculum and the school day routine. services focus on the impact the the physical disability has on classroom performance rather than on the disability itself. READING/WRITING LEARNING CLINICDedicated to providing literacy support to children, adolescents, and adults in an environment where learners have the safety and support that allow them to take risks and gain confidence as they move toward developing mature control of literacy skills. The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic provides services to families in the communities that adjoin Hofstra University as well as in the larger metropolitan area. New York state-certified literacy specialists provide weekly small group or individual instruction. Instructional sessions focus on reading and writing as meaning construction and are carefully crafted to develop a flexible set of reading and writing strategies to use while reading or composing texts. Phonics and spelling skills are addressed and taught in the context of meaningful language study. Our program is modeled on a Reading/Writing workshop approach that creates an environment for engagement in author study, literature circles, and strategic reading and writing instruction. Students also participate in inquiry-based projects making use of fiction and/or nonfiction texts available from our library collection of award-winning children and adolescent literature, as well as through digital technology. The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic also offers professional reading and writing evaluations for school-aged children and adults. Our evaluations are qualitative assessments that describe the learner’s use of reading and writing strategies when transacting with and composing texts. The assessment process culminates with the development of a Biographic Literacy Profile which provides a detailed appraisal of the learner’s reading and writing strengths. Each literacy evaluation is conducted to advocate for the learner. Bixhorn Technical Center, the Islip Career Center and Harry B. Ward Technical Center serve high school students who are 15.5 (15 years and 6 months) of age by September 1st until the age of 21. Special Career Education (SCE) creates opportunities for all students by providing them with the technical and academic skills needed to prepare for future employment and a successful path to college or other post-secondary programs. SCE provides technical training to prepare students for a successful career. The structured training gives students the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further post-secondary education. VOCATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PROGRAMOffers a residential, college-based postsecondary transition program located in Old Westbury N.Y. for young adults with learning differences and Autism spectrum diagnoses. Since 1987, VIP has been helping students develop skills and accumulate experiences that help them reach their executive functioning, social, independent living, and work/college readiness goals. The programs include: Transition to Independence: this program is a VIP’s three-year curriculum program which emphasizes social, executive functioning, and independent living skills young adults need for independence and success. Employment Training: Students are placed in community-based internships with job coach support and participate in employment classes within the VIP curriculum. Pre-Degree Option: Students choose to take one to three credit-bearing courses per semester at NYIT, offered in conjunction with the VIP curriculum with individualized academic and counseling support. The Associate Degree Support Program is for qualified students who can earn an Associate’s Degree in three years in Communication Arts or Business Administration while receiving specialized support in academics and the traditional social and independent living support offered by VIP. The Introduction To Independence program is a I-to-I five-week summer experience that includes all the skill-building and experiential learning associated with VIP. I-to-I is open to high school students 17 and older who are either interested in VIP academic year programming or are in-between years at VIP.
