HATE CRIMES UNITResponsible for the investigation and case preparation of all violations of law perpetrated primarily due to a belief or perception regarding race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation, except for cases involving death or serious physical injury that may result in death. This shall include incidents relating to houses of worship and/or related facilities. This shall further include incidents involving the etching, painting, or drawing of a Swastika on any building or other real property without the permission of the owner or operator, as well as setting fire to a cross in public view. This command shall also keep files and statistics relative to such offenses. The Hate Crimes Unite assumes responsibility of all incidents upon determining the incident fits criteria as prescribed by the Hate Crimes Act 2000 of New York State, pursuant to Section 485.05 of the Penal Law. The incidents will be investigated to determine the hate crime element committed by factors outlined in the Hate Crimes Act established in New York as well as existing case law and experience. The Major Case Commanding Officer, or designee, will be responsible for properly identifying the incident as a hate crime and unsure this information is reported monthly, as accurately and correctly as possible under UCR standards, to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYSDCJS). The Major Case Section Commanding Officer, or designee, shall further act as a liaison to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and the United States Attorney's Office to ensure the proper charging and prosecution of hate crimes.SuffolkHATE CRIMES UNITSUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT

OFFICE OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/MINORITY AFFAIRSOffers technical assistance to community based organizations, providing outreach and services to the various ethnic communities in Suffolk County. Provides referral and information services for individuals seeking assistance in accessing programs or with questions regarding matters of discrimination. Under the Office of Minority Affairs, the County Executive's African-American Advisory Board, and the Anti-Bias Task Force function to improve cultural understanding between these ethnic communities, the county government and the community as a whole. Promotes minority business development, access to services and encourages civic participation at all levels by all members of the community. Houses the County's Minority Business Enterprise Coalition and the Women's Business Enterprise Coalition, which function to assist qualified women and minority-owned businesses in Suffolk County, and may also obtain applications and information on qualifications through the office of Minority Affairs.
