HERRICKS ALZHEIMER'S DAY PROGRAM OUR SPACEProvides the opportunity for those who have Alzheimer's or Dementia the chance to engage in social and recreational activities led by trained staff and volunteers who are understanding and accepting. It also provides the caregiver with respite time. Family members are encouraged to take part in monthly meetings where they have the opportunity to ask questions of the staff, discuss how the participant is doing in the program and share experiences and useful information with one another, as a means of mutual support. Activities include group discussions, cognitive activities including voice, number and memory word games art and music classes led by specialists in these fields, exercise including strengthening, stretching and range of motion, supervised outdoor walks, intergenerational activities, ongoing assessment and help in maintaining skills of daily living, pet therapy in cooperation with North Shore Animal League. Participant must be 60 years old, a Nassau County resident, diagnosed as having Alzheimer's Disease or dementia, under the care of a physician, able to feed self with minimal assistance, continent, and be able to benefit from the program. Registered victims receive automatic phone calls when an inmate has a change in status, such as release or transfer. KRASNER PSYCHOLOGICAL CENTERServices provided at the KPC are based on cognitive-behavioral treatment models, which address the “here and now” and the problem thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be associated with your distress. Our therapy is active and involves a collaborative effort and commitment between you and your therapist as you work towards measurable goals. CBT-based interventions are available for a wide range of problems, as typically found in outpatient clinics. Problems addressed include issues related to anxiety difficulties, adjustment problems, depression, grief, trauma, anger control problems, issues related to parenting, conduct issues with children, relationship and couple problems, sexual difficulties, occupational difficulties, academic problems including learning difficulties and ADHD, as well as issues related to personality. In addition, at the KPC we have state-of-the art specialty clinics designed to address specific kinds of problems: Anxiety Disorders; Depressive Disorders; Couple and Marital Relationships and Children and Teens. We offer group therapy and Psychological Evaluations and Testing. All clients will first undergo a careful assessment. We offer one-on-one treatment, couple and family therapy, as well as several group therapy programs. Treatment is typically once weekly, although more intensive schedules are also possible when warranted. The length of treatment varies depending on the severity and types of clinical problems. The average duration of treatment is approximately 12 to 16 sessions. We operate on a Wait List system. After a brief phone screening process, which takes approximately 15 minutes, you are entered onto our Wait List, which allows us time to match your needs with the best appropriate therapist from our team. We do not contract with insurance providers; however, our fees are based on a sliding scale according to income and are considerably lower than those of practitioners in the community. PHOBIA AND TRAUMA CLINICOffers unique and technologically advanced treatments for patients whose fears inhibit their quality of life. The clinic has also successfully treated clients with post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition caused by an unusually devastating and/or tragic experience. Some common phobias treated at the clinic include: travel on airplanes, trains; public speaking; animals; heights; post-traumatic stress disorder; experiences in a war environment; an accident on an airplane or in a car; unexpected and devastating tragedies, such as the events of Sept. 11 and rape or sexual abuse. Treatment of phobia and PTSD is accomplished by the use of exposure therapy. In exposure therapy, under safe, controlled clinic conditions, patients are immersed in the situations they have long avoided, or asked to confront the traumas they experienced in their lives. Therapists simulate the environments that trigger a phobic response so the patients can learn to better manage their fears. Therapists use Imaginal exposure; virtual reality exposure and in-vivo exposure. The Saltzman Center is open Monday through Saturday. All therapy services are by appointment only.
