Individuals and families who have no fixed, regular and adequate residence, who are residing temporarily with relatives or friends or who live on the street, in emergency or transitional shelters, in a hotel or motel paid for with a shelter voucher, in seriously substandard housing or in an abandoned building, place of business, car or other vehicle, or other public or private place that is not ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for people. Some people who are homeless have issues with substance abuse, chronic or severe mental illness, chronic unemployment or underemployment, or other problems that prevent them from obtaining housing.

EMERGENCY/TRANSITIONAL HOUSINGProvides emergency housing through the Supervised Family Residence (SFR). The SFR houses up to nine families each, living under the supervision of a case manager. Families are able to give each other peer support and encouragement, and everyone benefits from the homelike atmosphere. CHI also provides emergency housing to single adults in a Supervised Singles Residence (SSR), licensed by New York State, using the congregate model and providing intensive case management, including supervision from a psychiatric nurse practitioner. In addition, CHI in partnership with Suffolk County DSS, operates a service center in Patchogue open to homeless single adults. ESPERANZA HOMELESS CHILDREN AND YOUTH PROGRAMServes migrant eligible children and youth ages 3 – 22 that are also affected by homelessness in the Long Island – Metro region. Students that meet the NYSED – MEP criteria as “Priority for Service” (PFS) are considered to be at higher risk for needing assistance, and will be assigned a greater level of support through this funding source. These students are provided with additional advocacy, school supplies, emergency assistance such as food and clothing if needed, as well as supplemental educational support. Services are designed to support students and school districts in providing access and assistance to homeless, migrant students, and to remove the additional barriers to education that they experience due to their lack of stable housing. These services are available to families meeting the traditional migrant eligibility, as well as the criteria for homelessness, as stated in the McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth Act, and are provided at no charge to families or school districts. HOMELESS INTERVENTION PROGRAMOffers people help to obtain long term housing and maintain that housing once assistance being provided to them ends. Services include legal services, financial assistance, eviction prevention, credit counseling, budgeting skills housing location, mediation, security and utility deposits, utility and rent arrears payment, and stabilization services. Financial assistance and support is provided to participants for an 18 month period and re-certification every three months is necessary. WARMBED-NASSAU COUNTY'S EMERGENCY SHELTER RELIEF PROGRAMProvides immediate emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families in Nassau County during the winter months. Program typically operates from the day after Thanksgiving through March 31 of the following year. If winter conditions persist beyond March 31st, the program will continue until warmer weather arrives. During operational hours, employees from WARMBED and the Department of Social Services (DSS) will make appropriate referrals and provide shelter placement. Once placed, the staff at DSS and the Office of Housing & Community Development will contact those who are homeless in order to access resources for permanent housing.
