Assessment for Substance Use Disorders

Programs that conduct an evaluation to determine whether an individual has a substance use disorder based on a pathological set of behaviors related to use of that substance as well as the nature and extent of the problem. Diagnostic criteria include inability to control or limit the amount taken or the frequency; intense cravings; continuing use despite problems with work, school or family/social obligations or interpersonal problems; risky use, e.g., diving a car or operating machinery while under the influence; or evidence of pharmacological indicators (tolerance and withdrawal symptoms), the adjustment the body makes as it attempts to adapt to the continued and frequent use of a substance.

NASSAU CRIMINAL COURT TASC PROGRAMProvides an alternative to incarceration program used by the Criminal Courts to divert individuals who are charged or subject to conviction for a non-violent felony or misdemeanor that is causally connected to a substance abuse problem. TASC identifies the level of addiction, makes a referral to an appropriate treatment agency, and monitors treatment progress for the Court. Education and Assistance Corporation has operated TASC programs in the metropolitan area since 1978. The TASC model includes a detailed assessment and development of a written plan designed to address the treatment needs of individuals appearing in Court. Offenders must be willing to enter treatment for a minimum of 12-18 months. Potential participants are identified by referral from the Court for its approval. TASC clients are monitored by staff with an expertise in substance abuse, and regular reports are presented to the Court outlining client progress. Persons not complying with all conditions of the TASC treatment plan are brought back to Court for further Court Action. SUFFOLK CRIMINAL COURT TASCSuffolk TASC is an alternative to incarceration program used by the Criminal Court to intervene with individuals charged with a non-violent misdemeanor/felony crime that is casually related to their substance abuse. Services are provided to adult offenders, facing 60 days or more of jail time and who demonstrate an alcohol and/or drug problem. Suffolk TASC will also accept non-violent predicate felony offenders with the approval of the District Attorney's office. TASC identifies the level of addiction, makes a referral to an appropriate treatment agency, and monitors treatment progress for the Court. The treatment plan developed by TASC staff is presented to the Court for its approval. Defendants participating in TASC must have a current history of substance abuse and be willing to enter treatment for a minimum of 12 months. TASC clients are monitored by staff with an expertise in substance abuse, and regular reports are presented to the Court outlining client progress. SUFFOLK FAMILY COURT TASCProvides an alternative program used by the Family Court to intervene with individuals appearing in court who are substance abusers. TASC identifies the level of addiction, makes a referral to an appropriate treatment agency, and monitors treatment progress for the Court. The TASC model includes a detailed assessment and development of a written plan designed to address the treatment needs of individuals appearing in Court. In Family Court, TASC intervenes with individuals in Court on PINS and Juvenile Delinquency petitions, Family Offense charges or Child Neglect petitions. Respondents participating in TASC must have a current history of substance abuse and be willing to enter treatment for a minimum of 12 months. Potential participants are identified by referral from the Court. The treatment plan developed by TASC staff is presented to the Court for its approval. TASC clients are monitored by staff with an expertise in substance abuse, and regular reports are presented to the Court outlining clients progress. Persons not complying with all conditions of the TASC treatment plan are brought back to Court for further Court Action. SUFFOLK TASC EDUCATION PROGRAM (STEP)Accepts at risk individuals arrested or convicted of DWI offenses, or where alcohol is believed to be a primary factor, and offers them education about the disease concept of alcohol abuse or dependency. Participants attend a 5 week 12.5 hour educational series at a cost of $300.
